Lesbians rejoice!
#1
Quote:ATHENS -- An Athens court on Tuesday rejected a complaint by inhabitants of the Greek island of Lesbos who had wanted gay women to stop monopolizing the term 'lesbian,' a justice source said.

The court ruled that the term "lesbian" does not define status and personality and therefore the islanders had no reason to complain that they felt personally slighted by its use.

Three residents of the Aegean Sea island had filed a complaint in April, calling on the Greek Gay and Lesbian Community, the country's main homosexual association, to drop the term.

The verdict is open to appeal.

Often referred to in Greece as Mytilene -- the name of Lesbos' capital -- the island was the home of the poet Sappho, who expressed her love of other women in lyric verses written in the early sixth century BC.

Many locals are rankled by the fact that the resort of Eressos is a popular tourist destination for lesbians.

They need to chill out. I think they wanted to ban the use of the word "lesbian" around the world (?) or something of the sort because they live on an island called Lesbos. *half chuckles* .-.

Come on now, that would be too easy. Besides the name probably has some history behind it.

The second paragraph might answer some of it.

Quote:Les·bos (lĕz'bŏs, -bōs) also Lés·vos (-vôs)

An island of eastern Greece in the Aegean Sea near the northwest coast of Turkey. An important Aeolian settlement, Lesbos was noted for its lyric poets, including Sappho, in the seventh century B.C. After occupation by various powers, the island was annexed by Greece in 1913.

According to Classical Greek mythology, Lesbos was the patron god of the island. Macar is reputed as being the first king whose many "daughters" bequeathed their names to some of the present larger towns. In Classical myth his "sister", Canace, was killed to have him made king. The place names with female origins are likely to be much earlier settlements named after local goddesses, who were replaced by gods. Homer refers to the island as "Macaros edos", the seat of Macar. Hittite records from the Late Bronze Age name the island Lazpas and must have considered its population significant enough to allow the residents to "borrow their gods" (presumably idols) to cure of their king when the local gods were not forthcoming. It is believed that emigrants from mainland Greece, mainly from Thessaly, entered the island in the Late Bronze Age and bequeathed it with the Aeolic dialect of the Greek language, whose written form survives in the poems of Sappho, amongst others.

Lesbos was an island that Odysseus landed on on the way back to Ithaca in Greek mythology. Many lulz were had when we heard the island's name. I think they'd rather keep the original Greek name.

When I was in grade school I was told the island of Lesbos was inhabited by women, and so the term Lesbian was derived.

People pine for the "good old days" when there was "greater morality," but there is no fraternity party today that can equal the debauchery of drunken ancient Greek orgies in praise of the gods.

I just wonder how many of them ancient Greek priestesses had VDs which would serve as a permanent reminder of the events to the flock. Tongue
