Gauging Interest - Free(ish) Zakum Helms and Skills

I had a vision.....

I had a vision of zhelms and skill books for free!. Free!...What? Free Wow!.

Free.
Well
Kinda free.(tiny print -free for the price of an apple donation or so).

Here's the deal. There's a large market out there of selling zhelms, selling level 10 4th job skillbooks. Selling Zakum Diamonds, Selling everything. It's okay. I get it. You gotta make a buck to afford your level 30 skill books and your super awesome scrolled equips etc. But, lets be honest. It sucks. The point of making zakum drop skillbooks is to encourage teamwork. To make the game more of a group activity, rather than allow you to just grind merrily on your way to your own personal goals. It's a mmorpg, I get it.

Now the real situation. Some of us don't have the funds, the connections, the time, or the patience to get on Zak runs. We feel awkward asking strangers, or friends of friends to help us out. We have guild mates that need helms, and friends that need books. We have a group of high levels that just don't happen to be the right classes to fully take out zakum.

What does this mean. Well I'm sure many of you, like me, would like to be able to get our skill books and our zhelms without having to pay for these things.

This is my vision.

I would like to get a group of people together that choose to run to help friends/family/guildmates get their helms/books etc without having to pay.

But who will fund the apples? My goal would be for a zhelm looter to provide 2-3 apples, a skill book looter provide 1-2 apples etc. If there are no apples, we run appleless. Yes you probably wont get reimbursed for your pots, you will probably lose money, but in the end, you'll have a place to come to get your secondary chars helms and skills, or your young friends/guildmates that just dont have the funds to buy.


What about the sellable drops? If something drops that isn't needed in the group or among the buyers, we will sell it at fm value and divy out the proceeds to the people that didn't loot anything. People can bring along friends/guildmates/mules that need helms - looters will be via referral of runners to prevent every nub in broa jumping in trying to get a free helm.

Theoretically we'd start a list ranked by participation, and each contributor can recommend one person that needs a skill/helm. And then we'll rotate through as needed.

Basically I would like to gauge the interest in something like that, if you all think it can succeed, etc, or if you'd be willing to join something like this. I would like to think that Broa has some people willing to help out other broans without meso compensation

Just to give you a word of encouragement, Khaini has something very close to what you are proposing; we call it Vindication. Every Saturday and Sunday, a fairly large group of people meet up and go to Zakum. Qualifying is typically rather easy; you need to be 100+ or provide a necessary service such as HB. Once you have gone a few times, you will be moved up the list (based on attendance) and be able to get a helm or skill book in your turn.

Equipment and mastery books are sold by the run's organizers and the proceeds go for apples. They also accept apple donations, and new people who want to loot things quickly can donate several to help move things along.

So, it's a great way to have a little fun fighting a big boss, meet some nice people, and also if you can't (or don't want to) buy a Z-helm it's a great way to get one for yourself while helping others do the same.

I throw in my own words of support as well. I know I'll probably never get around to getting a Z helm on any of my chars until I need to get skills from it. I just never felt the need to get one badly enough to pay the meso fees people put up for it. So if I could get relatively free ones, I'd be all for it. As far as helping out, I can APQ on my mage if someone's willing to show me the ropes. I've been married for some time, but I've never gotten around to it. Always off galivanting around on other servers or too busy training my lower levels on Broa. So as far as apple donators go, if I ever get any, I'd have no problem contributing whatever I'd get off my mage. I don't even particularly care whether I get helmed any time soon either, I just like the idea of people like me being able to get stuff like that without the hassles and pain of dealing with the regular helm/skill/etc. sellers.

As far as making it work, well I hope it does, but it'll take a while to find out what works and what doesn't so I say good luck in the meantime.

Isn't providing 2-3 Apples the same as paying? Friends is usually the best way to get a free/cheap ZHelm, but I guess this helps people that need help expand their network a bit.

4-6 mil is a far cry from paying for a zakum helm. And that's why it's called free-ish I can't expect anyone to fund the runs apples particularly for no pay. If the run makes enough on drops to fund some apples, then we could use that, I suppose, but some people dont have or don't want to impose on friends runs that are for profit to loot helms for their friends.

As I said it's an idea and a work in progress, I'm sure we'd sort out more technical details if there's enough interest

@Wigum: Exactly. Even if someone were to cough up 4 onyx apples, at least in Khaini the average price for Z-helms these days is 45M. For the many people who don't have either tons of mesos or strong friends/guilds, it's a great way to get both experience at fighting Zakum and a helmet or skill.

You just need to make sure your runs are well organized. Some people will show up and loot out of turn, then disappear once they have what they want. Others will come back again and again even though they don't need anything. If you know who's who, keep track of your points or ranks or whatever determines who gets the helmets, skills, and cards, and feel free to reject people who don't follow the rules, I think things will work out fine!

I don't need anything that the Zakmonster drops but I'd be plenty willing to come along and help you kill the big bad statue without the extreme need for compensation when I'm not busy doing something else already.

This sounds pretty nifty. Even though the time isn't the most convenient for me (I don't get off work until 7-10pm EST, meaning I could only go on days off unless the runs started later) sign me up anyway and we'll see how it goes.

Same thing is being done in Bellocan, only named "Pants off Fridays". Pants are optional, yet they do require a form of collateral, to make sure their other drops aren't looted out of turn. It's a great process if you can get a good group together, and it's decent for experience. *cookie*

We are not "Selling" Zhelms. However if you have characters or friends that can join and contribute to our group, you are welcome to come/join our runs.

I'd like to start the runs on Thursday, July 23rd. I will be contacting people that said they'd come this week and next. Please RSVP by Tuesday July 21st - If you whisper me in game, and I do not respond, do not assume I will see it. I do have 2 dogs so I am afk at times - whether or not you can come and if you need something (plus how many apples you can donate for looters). You can rsvp in game, or via pm here. I will post up a run list for runs on Thursday on Wednesday night prior to the run - so check back. The run list will also include points and loot orders.

How this works:

• Level 100+ can join the run regardless of class. However depending on the number of people coming, you may or may not be asked to run on any given week.
  
• If you have a character under 100 that you wish to loot for, you must be able to contribute in some way - either on a different char or by getting a friend to help participate in our runs.
  
• Loot order will be determined by points - see below.
  
• We will not take random people on this zrun. This is meant to be a group working together, to help each other out. Loot order will be determined prior to the run. We will not be picking people up standing in nath.
  
• There will be no pay in the traditional sense. We are not selling helms. If there are drops to sell that don't go to apples, we will sell them, and payout. But do not expect pay.

1. Showing up in nath, on time and ready to go. - 1 Point
2. Donating Apples - 5 Points for each Apple
3. Surviving the Zak Run - 1 Point

You will lose points for each of the following actions
1. Looting a helm/skill/zak card - 10 points
2. Not showing up when you are expected.- 5 Points

Helms and skills will go to those with the most points (points are transferable to your alts and friends - ie if you have 20 points, you lose 10 for helming your nub)
Helmless people will get priority over helmed people (for reloots)
