Clean Slate Glitch?
Harrisonized Wrote:A check that limits it to 10 in my opinion, would be fair to the people who have enough meso to attempt such feats, and would prevent Cyanne's example of the 32000 atk FS.

A protection really isn't very hard to design for this problem. I know it's easier said than done, but really this doesn't take much for a professional team of game designers.

They shouldn't even have to worry about such a thing. If they fixed this glitch with White Scrolls, there wouldn't be a problem or potential for anything crazy.

It would be vastly easier to correct White Scrolls than code in some limit or whatever.

No it wouldn't be fair, items have a set number of slots for a reason, it's ridiculous that this was even able to happen... And just remember, on the off chance Nexon go on a purge, like they have done in the past, a +6 cape looks mighty suspicious. I hope this cape holds no sentimental value like that pan lid =S

LoL Rick. The cape indeed holds sentimental value to me. Frown
Oh the memories involved with it.

I remember scrolling two capes (all 7 matk) back in the day when they were 25m each. I was able to afford three and used two 30%s impulsively, after I saved up enough selling ilbis from WS (back then, all I did was farm ilbis from wolf spiders by misting there for hours upon hours). Surprisingly both of them work.

I used three 70%s on each of the two 3int 7matk 4slot capes and they all pass, then the last slot I used 60%. One of them worked, one of them failed. The one that turned out 11INT I kept. I gave the 9INT 7matk cape free to a friend Darknesslily, who no longer plays. >_>

I had this cape since. The second memory involved with this cape was when I found my first GM scroll in MTS for cheap, and then after buying everything, had 100m left to burn. I used that 100m and failed ALL the Cape For Cold Protection Scrolls on it. It took me two weeks to get the Cold Protection effect onto the cape.

It would pain me greatly to see this cape destroyed by Nexon, especially since it was made legitly. I hope that if they do a purge, they spare my cape and spare my character. Otherwise, I hope they see this and consider that I merely tested out a feature of their game and that I have no malicious intentions to exploit this design.

I really don't wanna start a war here, but Nexon will only see the +6. Whether it was with malicious intent or not, the glitch was still exploited and therefore the cape wasn't really made legitimately. They've shown in the past to be rather unforgiving, they wouldn't even help the legitimate people in most circumstances.

Too bad this magical purge you speak of never happened with perfect weapons. I would hope Nexon could control something like this before it got out of hand, but then again this is Nexon we're talking about. They'll either fix it straight away or ignore it entirely until it destroys the game, and then keep ignoring it.

No they won't, they'll ignore it entirely until it destroys the game then decide to ban people who had nothing to do with it. Just like Big Foot. I'm not calling for bans though, just deletion of the offending items.

While I completely agree with you, and pray to.... whatever that it'll happen, I highly doubt it and am saddened by it.

Hmm... I just thought of the perfect solution.

Up the chance of cold protection scrolls to 30% and then make it scroll blocked when it passes. Add a line of text signifying passing when the cold protection scroll passes. This way you cannot gain infinite slots and it'd maintain fairness.

Hmm... I'd seem like I missed this reply:
FelixTM Wrote:And are you seriously still trying to argue that this is a "feature"? Honestly? You've just proved it's a glitch. Even by your obscure standards you have to agree... That cape is set in stone as having 5 slots. You have now found a way to break that barrier and give it 6. You can't be so naive as to truly believe Nexon intended it to work that way...
Eh, nobody said capes had to have only 8 slots. Just because everything is 8 slots, doesn't mean something cannot break the pattern. For example, at first there were work gloves, and then there were brown work gloves. At first there were regular capes, then there were YACs.

Nexon never said anything about capes limited to those slots only. They didn't say "A Protypical Cape for the Adventurer with 8 slots." Because they did not release a direct means of increasing the slots possible doesn't mean they're limited to it. A better example is... we can say earrings were never meant to have attack on them, since scrolls cannot add weapon attack. What if somehow they gave a quest that ave atk on earrings? How would that be viewed?

The only way I'll consider it a glitch is if:
1) Nexon declares it.
2) It requires (either physical, such as pulling your cable and replugging, or repacked, such as editing your wz files, in which case would be a hack) kind of manipulation of the game. This phenomenon does not require either of these.
3) Someone convinces me through overwhelming evidence that it is not supposed to occur. Somewhere that it is addressed. I'm starting to lean towards the side that it is a glitch because of the white scroll talking about preserved and not added slots, but I guess that's not enough at the moment to sway my position.

Thus it is still a "feature" until 1 or 3 happens.
Harrisonized Wrote:Hmm... I just thought of the perfect solution.

No, the "perfect solution" is this:

White Scrolls do what they are described to do:
Block the removal of a slot when a scroll fails. If a scroll does not change the number of slots, do nothing.

They are not "add a slot" scrolls, they are "protect failure" scrolls.

It's one thing for "perfect gear" to be +7 10%.

It's quite another for "perfect gear" to have no upper limit except the physical number of scrolls on a server.
Harrisonized Wrote:Hmm... I just thought of the perfect solution.

No, the perfect solution is fixing White Scrolls.

I don't think there's anyone on this board more dense than you, except maybe Devil. But at least he'd frickin' get it.
Old glitch, kinda. What happens with any scroll, is usually the following:
Check if a slot exist.
If a slot exists, do the following:
Remove a slot.
Add the effects the scrolls give with the probability of the scroll.
If scroll failed and this is a dark scroll, explode the item with the probability of the scroll.

Now, this is what the white scroll does:
If the scroll failed and a white scroll was used, add a slot to the item.

Now, slates do this:
Check if the amount of upgrades on the item plus slots left is less than maximum amount of scrolls. ([item upgrades] + [slots left] < [base slots on item])
If the upper is true, do the following:
Add a slot.
If the upper is false, do the following:
Explode the item with the probability of the scroll.

Protection and spike does the following:
Add the effects the scrolls give with the probability of the scroll.

See the issue? They remove the slot before applying the scroll effect. That's the issue, not that cape for cold-protection is able to be scrolled more than once on a cape.

Anyway, the glitch discussion. I want to join in:

First I would like to state what a glitch is for people that doesn't already: A glitch is defined by Nexon as a feature that is not intended by the creators.

If we all agree on that, I will state this:
A feature can only be defined as a glitch by the creators, not by the users.

Now, we know that a glitch is not an intended feature. This means the creators have not programmed the code with this feature in mind. This again means that they may not be aware of the glitch from the day they released this glitch. But does it make it legal to use this glitch anyway? No, because a feature the creators do not know about, is (for the most part) not intended by the creators. Thus, using a glitch before the creators know about its existence is just as "legal" as using a glitch after the creators label it as a glitch.

Good. Now, we have not heard anything about this from Nexon. Therefore, my friends, we cannot be sure 100% if this is a glitch or not. Agreed?

Hopefully, you are all aware of something named common sense. We are going to use that now, because we're still unsure of the intendedness of the feature explained through the earlier pages:

Imagine yourself being in the shoes of a programmer from Nexon. You recently created this new scroll, named "Clean Slate scroll". What did you intend to do with this scroll? Did you intend it to add a slot to an item with a failed slot if the scroll worked? (given yes) Did you intend to add a slot to an item with a failed slot if the scroll failed, it didn't blow up, and you used a white scroll at the same time? ([insert answer])

This other time, you created other scrolls; "Protection for cape" and "Spike for shoes" scrolls. These one adds the effect that is stated, protection for cape and spikes for shoes with a certain probability, without using any slots on the item. Was this your intention? (given yes) If these scrolls are combined with a white scroll, and the scroll fails, they will add a slot to the item. Was this your intention? ([insert answer])

At both places, I will state no. Though I'm not thinking as a programmer at Nexon's headquarter, I do think with common sense. I may have overlooked something that makes this feature to an intended feature, but I surely doubt it. Why would a Nexon programmer design an item which gives a possibility to create a 500 slot cape?

That's how you have to think.
I keep hearing this is an old glitch.
But I have NEVER seen +extra slot gear hanging around.
So either people are hiding it (for a good reason- looks like hax)
or people didn't know they could do this.

This glitch is old by the fact that it was already out when white scrolls and clean slate scrolls were available.
Though this glitch wasn't known by the average mapler until some time ago, think about this yourself:
It seems like you're the only one knowing about this glitch. Therefore, you're able to abuse it as much as you want to without being caught. Why the heck would you then show this thing to others, which would result in a harder time earning money by using this glitch?
or
It seems like a glitch, I should report it to Nexon asap. *waits 3 months and receives a "We'll look into this issue"-reply*

Right but the idea of a +6 to a +5 item...
I don't know if a merchant/hacker would try to sell it since you have to explain it.
MTS would work...
I just HAVEN'T seen anything to suggest that people knew to use cold protection + white scroll to make 6 Slots.
That is all.Glitter

That's how you have to think.
You have convinced me now, that it is a glitch. There is though, two points I have to disagree with you about:
1) You cannot use "common sense" to explain things. "Common sense" is merely a label, it is not logic.
2) You cannot predict the future actions of Nexon, as with your "possibility to create a 500 slot cape". As stated somewhere in the earlier pages, many of the glitches such as jumpcasting with mages or HP washing became features when Nexon let them slide. Why would they give you a chance to make "false" stats that give bowmen the same survivability as Mages?

I commend you though for typing this out, contrary to Felix and Opeth, who merely just stated that I'm stupid or dense for thinking logically.

Jumpcasting IMO isnt a glitch. It is how computers work. On an average keyboard, you can press 3 buttons at once, minus a few special ones. Pressing jump and claw, say while to the human eye looks to be 1 single action, the computer takes that as 2 actions, separated by milli-seconds, something we dont process normally. Those instructions then get translated into graphic, and hence the delays allow you to see what you saw.

Is it fixable? Perhaps, maybe by putting a delay on the input acceptance, but that would most likely to cause issues on other things. The problem lies in the hardware itself, not Nexon's code. This and HP washing (I'd say this is a glitch) isnt "game-breaking" enough for them to fix. This is just a spec of dust compares to adding slots to items.

To fix this, they need to fix the white scroll itself. Fixing other scrolls mean they need to do it every time another similar scroll comes out. I agree still that it isnt a glitch until Nexon says so. Who are we users to say that is what intended or not intended?

Jumpcasting is a glitch as Maple did not design it for mages to jump attack. If they did, they would have made mages like hermits being able to jump while they attack.

Adding slots to items cost much more than HP washing. Keep in mind each slot takes 450m and really isn't worth it unless you have all your equipments fully upgraded.

Jumpcasting is a "glitch" that Nexon DID NOT design, period. It is NOT part of their code, it is NOT something they can control. It is an issue with hardware, interrupts and concurrency. This is like how you typed something, slipped your finger and ended up pressing 2 characters. Notepad, MS Office etc will print out 2 characters concurrently. The order of those 2 characters is being determined by the slight micro-seconds that we human cannot process (normally).

Jumpcasting isnt something Nexon designed, so they cant say it's a glitch, unless they're going to change the OS itself. They carry no authority in labeling it a glitch, and so are you. Is it an unintended feature? Perhaps, but the very basis they built their game on works that way. The computer has the ability to switch between processes so fast that it makes you "feel" that things are being running simultaneously. Technically, however, you're pressing 2 commands at 2 different instances, which explains why sometimes you can jumpcast, while other times you cannot.

As for adding slots, the "implication" is what I was talking about. The potential it poses is just "game-breaking". While it might cost the same as HP washing now, the benefits you get out of this is a lot greater than HP washing. Keep in mind that there was a limit on how strong one could get.
New alternative to hp washing: 500 slot cape

10% cape hp = 50x30hp = 1500 hp
60% cape hp = 300x10 hp = 3000 hp
100% cape hp = 500 x 5 hp = 2500 hp

I'll take an extra 3k hp plz :3

....
and of course I'm not being serious...

^ It's sad that I actually have to write that.
