Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS Discussion
Frostilyte Wrote:Well...Greninja is a ninja...

So is shiek and she was never that hard to hit even in brawl. Her focus is more on efficiency and having crazy good frame data, so it's interesting having an actual ninja playstyle.

I like the ideas behind a lot of these new characters. Megaman has insane priority in all directions, greninja has the untouchable style, villager is anti-camp, little mac is 100% ground based, and wii fit trainer is the only one with a power up skill.

Huh. You know I never really thought of Shiek as much of a ninja...That might be in part due to not having played Ocarina of Time as a kid...

It definitely is nice to see the new play styles. I'm personally interested to see how they end up feeling.
And I'm sure that there is some form of flaw in Greninja's attacking patterns that will be exploitable. Smash will hopefully focus on more aspects of balance when compared to the other smash titles that have been released. It seems like the team really wants to make a game for the competitive player base, and balance is key in doing that.
Plus, even as a casual player I don't want to see one character completely outshine the others for one reason or another.

As a more general question, are the character changes we saw last Tuesday the only ones we know about, or were there others announced prior? I can't recall if there was or wasn't...

Hard to say based on ocarina of time since she didn't actually do anything except suddenly appear out of nowhere. Pretty sure most people would say she's a ninja though.

Of course me saying greninja will be impossible to hit is an exaggeration. Under SSB64 hitstun rules, getting a hit on greninja SHOULD result in big damage or a kill to be successful. I think for this reason the greninja/villager matchup will be very one sided since villager doesn't really seem to have that great a damage game unless it involves d-smash -> tree/bowling ball which would be hard to get on a character made to be hard to hit and very fast. I'm not really seeing anything that's majorly overpowered. If anything it would only be unbalanced matchups rather than an unbalanced roster, which is probably better. It encourages one to pick up and be good with a variety of characters to be able to deal with those characters that overpower your other ones instead of maining the best one and destroying the entire cast.

The other changes we know are mostly from the daily pics. There is other information we know, but we didn't know a whole lot of what was shown in the direct previously. Most of it was completely new.

sheik is more of a ninja than greninja, greninja is a more hollywood-y ninja with all it's crazy tricks and such while sheik is the more traditional kind

That's actually a fantastic comparison, especially now that shiek doesn't have that dumb chain anymore. A lot of greninja's moves seem like it's taken straight from shiek though. Up smash, the water shuriken, even his dash and movement speed looks exactly like shieks.

Well then it's probably just me then.

That could certainly make things more interesting. Among my immediate group of friends I'm the only one that's actually tried to learn multiple characters. Will be nice if that actually becomes useful in the future. Biggrin
Granted, as stated before I'm a casual player, so like 90% of the people who will read this can probably completely own me. :f6:

Ah I see...
So it is still a waiting game to know all of the changes.

But I'm a stupid white person, so when I think of a ninja I think of the hollywood ninja as completely incorrect as that may be.

Character and matchup balance doesn't really matter at a casual level though. As OP AS F'UCK as metaknight may be, he can be incredibly hard to control and takes a lot more time to learn to control compared to other characters who are more camp-y. Same deal in melee with the space animals. I wouldn't really worry about that stuff if you're not looking to beat everyone.

i was referring more to the substitute "log" ninja, finisher in front of the moon with clones, massive shurikens.

the arsenal of sheik is much more normal in comparison, small darts, murdering wire, the chain back in melee, etc.

Oh i know that's what you meant that's why i thought it was a great point. Maybe also the use of elements (water), even though he's a water pokemon ninjas usually have the ability to use various elements. Shieks fire is always from explosions, and i guess electricity on her chain.

i always assummed the electricity was so that she wasn't absolutely destroyed when using the chain due to terrible knockback (and for more visibility) but yea, magical hollywood ninjas. that said greninja looks pretty fun, i'm a sucker for characters with counters, and unlike lucario's it might seem that greninja's substitute actually has a lot of range. so many whiffs into a smack by ike when playing against my friend ._.

It may not matter to little mac though :/

just what i need, substitute just to sweep in fron of mac and get ohko'd. we'll have to see, either way greninja ain't what i'm most hyped about.

LATEX COVERED SAMUS WITH ROCKET POWERED KICKS.
my everything is ready.

any idea when the next direct or "big news" could be? i'm usually out of the loop regarding that kinda stuff.

I guess there will be 1 more direct that has a small character release(probably like falcon) between now and E3(which is June 10). Around E3, Nintendo will probably unveil their final suprise for the game, as the date for the 3DS release is approaching(as the summer has started shortly after)

I only saw one good use of it and it was in brawl. In shiek vs olimar, the chain can be used with the right rhythm to prevent olimars descent, possibly steal his jump, and keep him locked in the spot above you to tack on a ton of damage. I saw someone rack up 150%+ this way.

I also saw it used well...can't remember if it was Melee or PM, but it stopped Marth in his tracks.

I mean most people stop in their tracks just because they don't want to deal with it haha but yeah it has minor uses that should be used extremely sparingly.

Apparently I didn't post this last night even though I had everything set up.

It's a shame that the for glory versions didn't just turn off the gimmicks in each level and leave the platforms there.

Would have been much better than 20+ copies of the same map.

I agree. Might as well have made local versions too so the hazard stages are never played.
