Coca-Cola Superbowl Ad

I told that teacher lady the only three letters I need to know are U, S, and A.

Maybe I'm cynical but each time I hear that ad I ask myself "is that thing after english supposed to be spanish?", had to check the original song to understand what she was singing(all those Rs sound so forced you can barely get what she is saying).

People on tumblr and twitter get buttfrustrated over anything.

While I agree with this, that doesn't make the reactions to the ad (at least those reacting to the context, rather than the company) any less awful.

It's hard knowing motives for sure, but good person =/= business move...kinda like the recent issue with the anti-gay pasta company, thus resulting in other pasta companies showing their support for homosexuality.

"Good" intentions aside (and taking a neutral standpoint on the entire issue), I call it corporate greed using business tactics to get more sales.

It could have easily been a scenario where some random employee had a good idea, and then the big wigs went, "Yes, we can use this to start a 'war'!"

I don't put it past them, but I doubt it was entirely an evil commercial.

I saw this coming when I saw the commercial. My father tends to be like the people who posted and I heard him grunt multiple times during the commercial, so I immediately saw how people can react to it. So glad I take almost nothing after him even more today.

My dentist got upset with it so I said "so what you're telling me is that depicting America as it is is a bad thing"

He asked me to explain and I said "there is no real American culture, we're a collection of a bunch of different races and cultures all living in one country, remember the concept of the melting pot? This advertisement was merely a nice message to everyone that we need to remember that America is beautiful, for everyone."

He shut up after that.

On your next cleaning, he's going to deliberately poke your teeth frequently out of spite.

I actually enjoyed that commercial, although I saw this coming a mile away, and normally I'd be in agreeance that the National Anthm shouldn't be altered for the sake of tradition, but this idea really did demonstrate what the spirit of america should be.

This is why I never talk to dentists.

I certainly thought it was STRANGE, but then, I find most commercials to be strange; it certainly wasn't offensive.

I was to make this, I'd think "Hey, let's make an awesome, love-filled commercial for people to enjoy. Something that really encompasses what America as a whole truly is."

idunno, couldn't that have been achieved by using "We Are The World" instead?
Or just had "America the Beautiful" entirely in English and then just shown various diverse groups? That way they could have shown more ethnicities instead of just...eight.

they could have really driven that home by having the Keres Pueblos singing in Mandarin and the Arabs singing in Spanish and the Senegalese singing in Tagalog, etc.

Anyway. Seems like a case of vocal peeps + inappropriate comments + internet + media = unwarranted popularity. While I believe (or want to) that this is a small part of the population, it still makes me feel a bit sad really. This might seem insignificant, but it's the little things that prevents different cultures from properly integrating themselves to the nation.

So you're saying that if we don't want to end up like the native Americans, we need to resist immigrants more effectively than they did?

A lot of the complaining people think that they're being forced to learn other languages because of this ad.

It is pretty difficult to talk with hands in your mouth, regardless of whether you like it or not. I never get why they ask you a question, and before you can answer they star shoving tools in your mouth.

Most of those twitter accounts have since been deleted.

I mean, that probably does something to the effect of 'teaches a lesson', but the extent to which it actually affected those people is questionable.

Reading the tweets really made me lose some brain cells.
