The word "legitimacy" is out of place in this context.

You use "legitimate" here to mean "real", but we take it to mean "legal", hence the reaction you got.

Should have used "existence". Or "validity". Or specified "the legitimacy of the reports of the exploit has been questioned".
English is such a lovely language.
