Second of all, even in melee, clones are completely different characters. Trying to tell anyone who knows anything about the game that fox and falco, cpt falcon and ganon, or link and young link are the same in anything other than visual terms will only result in them laughing in your face.

Not to argue semantics, but Dr Mario and Mario are definitely absolute clones. I'd say some others are too. Pichu is pikachu but with all his moves made weak as pomegranate (and a different up smash? I think that is the only significantly different move), which I think definitely makes him a clone too.

They made quite a bit of effort to differentiate between characters that had similar movesets in the melee -> brawl transition, so sakurai must have had at least some problem with it.

No way in hell are fox/wolf clones though. They share like, 2 moves. Everything else has wildly different hitboxes, range, damage,speed and knockback.

I actually forgot those sets but those two are actually closer to fox/falco in terms of how many actual similarities they have (almost none) compared to the rest of them.

Dr mario is a significantly higher placing in the tier list specifically because of his differences. Fair is a reliable kill move for doc with it's strong upwards trajectory that can be followed into by at least two of his throws, mario doesn't have that. (mario's fair is terrible for it's actual purpose to boot) Doc cannot wall jump at all, mario can, and can do it out of his up-B. (his only real disadvantage to mario) Doc's Usmash bounces opponents off the ground so it can't kill like mario's. Doc's cape is longer/has better range but he can't use it in his recovery to stall more than once unlike mario. Doc's pills are better because their bouncing and power is better. And of course his fsmash has obviously smaller range and doesn't have transcendent priority that the fire hitbox gives mario...all of these things combined makes the way that doc and mario approach EVERYTHING is very different. Also, the length of their wavedash may very well be different also but i don't know this off the top of my head.

Pikachu and pichu are kind of simpler to explain although i don't know much about pichu. Pichu's moves are mostly multi-hit versions of pikachu's (fsmash, down-b) with lighter weight (second worst weight in the game next to zelda, and zelda's is only worse because it allows her to be the most easily combo'd character, not because she dies earlier) and better recovery moves (even though her weight means pikachu ultimately survives longer and still has among the best recovery in the game). Pichu also has nowhere near the gimp ability that made pikachu a viable tournament character.

And yeah they did a great job with the transition, but i think sakurai would have wanted to spend more time/money on those details if he could, but it's because he couldn't that we have that problem.

Of course both characters aren't clones but the variation depends on your mastery of the game.

How could I forget Ike can use an axe when he reaches his final job in Radiant Dawn. That was silly of me.

Chrom is probably going to be in. Either him or Lucina, really, and Lucina would just be Pichu the sequel. Lucina can just be an alternate costume for Marth, with different voices, since she's basically Marth for like 70% of Awakening.

Though fire emblem lords have gotten boring since FE7 'cause I'm rather tired of all the sword users. Let's get an axe or a lance user in smash bros. already.

What I hope is that Lucina is an alternate costume for Marth that more or less just changes the appearance while the function is the same.

In fact, I want more alternate costumes other than just palette swaps... need something like what they did for Wario who had 2 costumes.

Also, I would have loved Roy more if his game wasn't so terrible...

I hope Ike comes back and gets his Radiant Dawn look... pre-Vanguard.

As a Fire Emblem fan, I want Ike to come back along with another character from Awakening.

It wasn't THAT bad, but it was definitely one of the rare cases where the prequel was so much better. I'd love to see a 3DS remake of FE 6+7 with more continuity between the two. It'll just be like that one FE game where you play as the parents in the first half, then their children in the second half! I don't remember which one that was!

But I'm still on the boat that Chrom or Lucina will end up playing WAY TOO SIMILARLY to Ike or Marth respectively. I mean, Chrom even gets Aether which I'm sure they'll just copy paste from Ike.

Chrom doesn't even do any of the animations Ike's Aether has and Ike's Aether looks freaking ridiculous in game. Lucina's looks like Marth's critical animation (because... she's Lucina).

I'm pretty sure they'll have something fresh if they do use those characters.
