If this was a thing my boyfriend and I would actively play MapleStory again. Neither of us have officially "quit" but we both stopped logging on regularly. As long as it doesn't replace the current MS so people can have a choice I'd be for it.

Although the suggested idea is admirable, I don't think creating a "NostalgiaStory" world would be helpful or effective. It's surprising to see how responsive CM's at MSEA/Asia Soft are, or appear to be, however.

In my opinion, creating an "Old School" server wouldn't serve the game in any substantial way other than to appeal to a small faction of players who want to recapture their childhood through this novelty server. In my opinion, what may have made MapleStory appealing and "magical" to many players between 2005 and whenever Big Bang hit was a combination of the community, the game, and tons of things that are beyond any of our control. The planets just lined up, per se. Trying to recapture that is not only impossible, but a huge waste of time, as many have pointed out.

For example, I look back to playing beta and the great friends I made for the first few years of MapleStory before Big Bang. Yes, you were forced to be more creative as there weren't as many features, and yes, the game was more challenging. But, I never got a character past level 75 until Big Bang. Perhaps I wasn't driven enough, or smart enough to get to a higher level. But, there were many people like me who couldn't level without 2x cards and the EXP curve was brutal and as a result, tons of players went to private servers. Big Bang, coupled with Nexon's legal onslaught, helped to eliminate that "threat."

That being said, I absolutely loved Big Bang, the new UI, and the new EXP curves. What I don't like, like a lot of people here, is the pay2win model Nexon has adopted and the ridiculously confused and broken economy within the game. The lack of the social focus of the game, which for all we know was a happy accident as there just wasn't enough to do in the game for the first few years other than grind or PQ, so those who weren't into SoloStory (and it was much harder to be solo if you weren't a machine) socialized to kill time and to enjoy the game. That was done more out of necessity than by design, in my opinion. Yes, the days of Kerning PQ were exciting and, here's the word again, "magical," but being able to actually feel like you were progressing in the game without spending most of your time grinding after Big Bang was a great feeling.

I could go on and on. I think there are a lot of great points made in the ProjectOMS post, but I don't think implementing it into some separate server so that players who are feeling nostalgic can go "back in time" whenever they feel like it would be accomplishing anything than satisfying the short-lived nostalgia of players who are close to quitting entirely. How many people do you think are realistically going to be playing the "Old School" version at once? Probably not many. MapleGlobal already has a population problem in a lot of servers, so I don't see how anyone would get any enjoyment playing with 100 people on an OMS server where there is absolutely nothing to do. You would be better off playing a private server at that point.

My advice, concentrate on more effective ways to increase the social interaction in GMS through PQs and so on and so forth, come up with an eloquent presentation on how to modify (and not remove, because let's face it, it's too late for that) the potential system, scroll back damage through some of the suggestions you made, and make the maps a bit more interesting to name a few ideas. I don't think most people miss just having Victoria Island and Orbis/El Nath. The new worlds and features are great - the foundation of the game is what is souring everything at the top. It really wouldn't take much to make GMS more enjoyable than beta and pre-Big Bang.

A side note: How would this be profitable for Nexon other than setting up a business model (pay2play) or ridiculous events tying in with your main characters to interest people in playing? If there's no profit to be made, then it's unlikely that it's worth the time, money, and effort.

My two cents. Good luck.

Nah. It's been said many times before in much more eloquent ways, but it really was by design. Many of the things that people view today as "inconvenient" were intentionally put in place to nudge players into interacting, socializing, and cooperating with each other. Now that most of those things have either been outright removed, made ineffective through the introduction of indirect changes, or penalized to the point that solo play is the superior alternative.

Fully support you in the campaign. I wish you the best of luck and, even better, would love to see you on the oldschool server!! Screw the people who don't want it to happen. They aren't obligated to play and in fact, should at least sign the measly petition if they claim to care about the community.

Sorry man.

Pre-BB is useless without my old friends.

One of the main problems is that a game needs to progress not to die. Simply starting a pre-potential server might seems like a good idea for the first week its open. It might even last a month with the stragglers who don't quit after that first week of "ooh, fun, nostalgic, etc". However, to keep the game alive, it would need updates, new content, supervision, and so forth. And as we all know, you can't just send it down the same path it went down, or else it loses its throwback feel. So now Nexon's having to develop said content for the OMS server to keep it fresh. And we all know they won't ever do that.

If you want old school Maple, wait and see if WonderKing NA ever comes back. That game's a 2D MMO that felt quite a bit like pre-potential, non-pay2win Maple Story, except with an auction house and the ability to get looting pets through ingame means if you tried hard enough. Oh, but all localizations of WonderKing shut down completely a while back...due to host-developer legal battles that could not be resolved, resulting in zero updates and a very stale, deserted game after a year. Now? WonderKing JP is up again, though there isn't any news of the NA version getting resurrected. I tried playing the JP version, but being unable to read any japanese makes questing impossible beyond what was dug up in terms of quest guides in english. I could just grind to 30 and reach 2nd job, but...eh, it got tedious and I couldn't chat with 98% of the population. XD

I really don't understand your reasoning behind this. It's something that some people would like to see, and others would rather not. It's pretty simple. You act like this is the death of the existence of maplestory itself. Like the worst that could happen is that i signed a measly petition for no reaction from nexon. Big woop. Might as well try.

Some theorize that if Nexon weren't so bogged down in pointless crap that they have no use for they may better be able to hear actual issues and concerns and value player input more.

Some also theorize the moon landing was faked and that we're all controlled by a puppet government ruled by little gray men, so take it as you will.
It's not having what you want - It's wanting what you've got.

Brilliant! So we'll send the Mythbusters to Nexon to figure out if the theories are confirmed, plausible, or busted. ^_^

It's a nice thought, but.. I just don't miss old maple? The game changes, and I really do enjoy what we have now albeit it is a bit difficult late game, but we have a lot of nice content now. I wouldn't spend time playing an older version.

I'd rather not waste my time in something beyond pointless.
I'd rather do something I find fun or productive... while trying not to waste other people's time.

Let me explain;

What you want is nothing more than a static private server who's entire basis is on good memories rather than the reality of what maplestory was back then. I'm sure when you were in your pre-teens, it was the best thing on the planet, much like the power rangers or the power puff girls. The server he's suggesting is pre big bang, which would mean;

Night lords being overpowered
Dark knights getting shafted as they have to maintain half their hp to 15% weaker than Hero's who have full hp. (which the concept was nice)
Alter holding
Ultimate leeching, which held up majority of the channels
White scrolls being a secondary currency
Onyx apple dependency (again beneficial to Night lords)
Big foot harassment

Not to mention the common hacks that would reappear, such as the disconnect hack. These are probably the biggest problems we had to deal with back then, but I'm sure people can easily add onto this. If you want to "fix" those that were mentioned, then you're defeating the point of the server itself. It's a capsule of what you, the OT(who discussed it with one other friend) approve of based on a severely limited perspective. Some people want this server back because they miss the things that were fair to them but not to others, such as ultima leeching, bigfoot ksing, and the clear night lord reign at bossing.

Oh let's also not forget about the clear exploitation in MTS. This is all not even discussing the social aspect missing which would make this a further empty shell. You can claim this is pessimism being played here, but it's really just being skeptical of the whole thing. Sure I would love for it to work, but then what? There's no future for it, players will begin to demand for the new classes as they are more familiar with them, they would demand new pq's, new bosses, then you have entirely new micro managed game, obviously it can't be the same. The features that you most likely have adapted too and enjoy would suddenly go poof, such as expedition. Would you ever put pink bean? Because from my understanding it was undefeatable without basic potential, would you make them scale it down? How far until the elite micro manage even that boss?

What's demanded here is unreasonable because it won't fix the problem, just allow another distraction for those who can't honestly let go.

Edit:

Quite frankly this "pre bb talk" kind of makes me laugh, our generation was massively looking forward to this update.

All I can think I didn't like of post bb were the smaller maps and potential the rest was broken as hell and bb did a good job fixing it(don't mind the imbalance of classes as that seems intended).

The old pre-BB maple was a terrible game compared to what it is now. It was a treadmill-grindfest of a game with an terrible high level community with much content out of reach of the casual player. The UI was terrible and outdated, the economy was dull and no better back then, hacking was worse, training was worse, classes were worse and badly designed, and accessibility was a huge problem for many classes than weren't sins or mages (I hated accuracy so much as a spearman and I hated Gobis as a Bandit). When 4th job came, mage ultis were the most unfair training tool in the game.

In my opinion, the only reason people ever remembered it so fondly (other than the social aspect) was because Nexon's business model wasn't so completely exploitative. The moment potential released was the moment Nexon had compromised its integrity of the game we played.

The novelty of it is alluring but that's all it is. To make a game people want to come back to, novelty can't be the only thing there. The sheer fact that Nexon is still standing by their game after all these years and creating newer and newer content (subjective) is what makes many people stay despite their monetized-powercreep business model, and there would be no way anyone would still be here if the game hadn't budged from 4th job/Leafre.

It'd probably make a lot more sense to ask for a world where potential was disabled.

Well they'd have to scale everything down as well. I think it be even easier if they did small amounts of NX in pq's, dojo giving you like a total of 5-10k nx if you complete it.
