What are the benefits for each one?

You only get a cape with fairly upgraded stats (not as good as PAC, heh) if you join one.

If you join both sides, you get a lot more fame and slightly more exp.

Something about starting both quests without finishing them, then finishing them.

Accept both the quests at the same time, then you can join both. I've got both capes. They're pretty cool looking, but only add speed + jump stats. D:

Yup, they changed it. Screws up the Alchedno and Jenumist (close enough in spelling).

I believe you can join both, all I did was end up doing both without having either one fully finished. Even after joining either side there's about 3-4 Quests for each side. I finished both sides Quests and I have nothing new and still have both Capes. Hope that helps. o_O
