Was there even a use to the beginner exploit? You couldn't get SP. I don't know why Tyler would knowingly do something that would not benefit him at all assuming he had ill intentions in the first place(which i do not believe).

To be honest, yes, it's against the rules, but his contributions are a lot more to show for some cheap ass gimmick. I don't agree with his actions and may scold him later because he's part of an organization we made that doesn't approve of this, but I honestly feel as though the punishment is way to severe.
Again this is my opinion, typically I go for the "black vs white" perspective to keep things balanced, but when you give people who have done considerably worse damage a jail out of free, and I say that in confidence with the hacker's on questionable websites bragging about this, then I think it's indefinitely something to consider. I do understand your opinion on the fact he should be held more accountable, but he's done more than any other user in the game, I think that should hold some credibility. 30 days, to me, would be more adequate, to set an example, but not destroy his integrity.
I have no idea who you are talking about (re: Maple radio leader), nor do I know his story to comment on it. Sorry. =/
Our policy is that people who abuse exploits are given permanent bans. Tyler was well aware of this, as would be anyone who is as familiar with the game as he is.
We do unban some people, but those are based on specific circumstances, and are performed on a case-by-case basis. In this case, following our policy, Tyler was not eligible for any leniency.
I'm admittedly floored that people are asking us to give Tyler leniency just because he's popular in the community. That's never going to be our policy. That would be favoritism and extremely unfair. Is that really what you guys want?

Speaking from experience here I've been falsely accused and banned on my account. Back in 2006-2007 I was training in the Sleepywood dungeon with a few friends. Then without any warning all of us disconnected from the game. To all of our dismay we were all banned. We did nothing wrong. We waited for our bans to be lifted and finally we could play again. About a year or so later I sent a ticket begging for my account to at least be placed back on the rankings as I did nothing wrong. After THREE YEARS of patiently waiting I was told I was a hacker and I would no longer be placed back on the rankings. I've tried countless times but I have NEVER been placed back, not even thought to be placed back on them. Now my appeal is just turned down without any hesitation. Ever since that false ban my account has been accused as being a hacker. My friends (who have quit now) were also seen as hackers. Nexon Am's false autoban or bad GM team banned me that day and I've always been held accountable for it. Even though I try my damn hardest to play by the rules. I even tell my guild: "If I can make 100 of you not hack or use hacks to your advantage, or even get personal gain from hackers then I did my job as a guild leader." I feel for all of the people in this thread who were falsely banned because I've been through it too. It was only 30 days but ever since then I have been called a hacker among other things because of a stupid auto ban or bad GM banned me. I support any petition to show evidence to those banned. If you at Nexon can get someone to show me substantial believable evidence of a ban back from 2006-2007 then by all means please PM me and show me this. If no one at Nexon can prove my ban was AT ALL justified, or until I'm put back on the rankings, my maple legacy and place on the rankings will be forever scorned by the fault of Nexon.
Now that you've mentioned it, I'm indeed not on the rankings anymore.
I don't really care about it but, yeah, I won't be able to participate on events that require a "clean" account. Not because of something I did but because of some pomegranate that Nexon decided to pull out on me.
What's even more annoying is how they act oh-so-merciful when releasing accounts. It's truly disgusting.

Well, there are people who abused this exploit and worse that get away with it.

It's pretty hard to abuse a glitch for over a hundred levels worth of experience without meaning to, I would think.

Does that mean that Nexon shouldn't ban the people that they do catch for doing this sort of pomegranate? Because a convenience store robbery remains unsolved does that mean that an armed bank robbery the next day shouldn't be punished either because the petty criminals the day before got away with it?

I'd rather get justice because I do not believe he would do something that serves no inherent purpose and would destroy his reputation as a loyal player and volunteer.
Considering there are still MANY people falsely banned, I can see it happening very easily.

The point is that the entire exploit was useless because you couldn't do anything with your beginner/adventurer anyway.

Also, you guys seem to be under the impression that we specifically targeted his account. He was caught up in all the other bans we processed that night, as fairly and anonymously as everyone else who was. We actually did not know he was banned until afterwards, when he contacted us. We triple-checked the rest of the bans as well, due to this - because we honestly thought there was an error as well. What if we had wrongly banned others? Seriously, it is a very sinking feeling...we always want to make sure that our bans are fair. We really would not have expected him to abuse an exploit.
But we found that the bans were just, and we aren't going to break policy to release his account just because he's popular.
What's worse, he directly lied to us and abused our trust. That is the worst feeling in all of this.

Without any transparency there is no way we as a player base can tell who is lying. At this point it is up to bias.

Don't get me wrong, I do respect you, in fact you're the only GM I have come to respect. But this was an incident and a common one in the hacker community. Whether you're aware of it or not, it's unfortunately reality, which is why the company get's so much whiplash when it comes to things like this.

You asked for our opinion, our opinion is that the exploit is not enough to warrant a ban for this specific individual because of his dedication towards the game. Not because we all are like "woah he's a cool cat bro". We would be up in arms and ridiculing him if he performed duplication and made money off his endeavor, he did not. From the information you told us, he toyed around with a harmless exploit.
A better example is a family guy episode demonstrated. Joe swanson who's a cop who saw the law as black and white chased a thief home. The thief stole food for his family because of the economy or whatever irrelevant circumstances. He let him go even though he broke the law, because in the bigger picture, he didn't hurt anyone and stole so little that he himself could pay the owner out of pocket.
You call it favoritism, I call it recognition for his contributions. Whether your question is looking for an answer or is just rhetorical, I don't know, but the waiver the community believes he's entitled to is not based on his reputation but his contributions.

It's not about being lenient, neither is it about Tyler being popular. I'm commenting as a player from MSEA that you guys were doing really great with the justified bannings such as the ones at Hard Mode Magnus until this came about and because there is absolutely nothing to be gained even if Tyler or anyone else exploited this glitch to high heaven and beyond it is absurd that he's getting permanently banned for this because his reputation would be permanently ruined anyway after this, so why bother slapping that hammer and getting more people to think this is ridiculously harsh?

I just got back to SP a day or so ago, so I can't say much about the situation with Tyler specifically, but I can say this.
I'm afraid to log in. Simply because I know what it's like to lose years of hardwork, with your company not wanting to work with us, or give any leeway or help to the people who do their best to make this game what it is. My friends and I do not feel like being permabanned just for playing Maplestory, and losing our items/NX/etc etc. I'm sorry to say this, but innocent people are being banned in huge numbers, something wrong is happening.
While, I'm in agreement that people who intentionally exploit a glitch should be punished, the main point everyone is bringing up that even if said glitch was exploited it had no negative effect on the community. What could an SPless adventurer do? Absolutely nothing. If anything, any character created by this was a waste of space that took up a precious character slot that can be used for upcoming classes. Meanwhile, the entire game is ran by hackers. To the point where people in your community are willing to take time out of THEIR day to get rid of them. While some of them do get banned, they merely make new accounts, or get unbanned a month later, and go back to making this game even more unbearable to play.
So really, it's not that people think someone should get unbanned because they would win a popularity contest, it's people being very frustrated that when you guys DO make an "effort" to clean up your game, you're completely ignoring the REAL problems that plague the community.
That all being said, for what is a rather harmless glitch, it was still glitch abuse. A permanent ban was very unjust in my honest opinion. I echo what others said when characters should have been deleted and a 30-day ban should have been the most that was handed out. Although if what you're saying about him is true(the lying and such) I can see why you guys handed out such a hefty punishment.

Okay, and you believe that Tyler would not have done it if it was functionally useless I'm assuming?
So we've got a couple of options to make sense of this.
First, Tyler simply didn't do it on purpose. I would tend to doubt this one simply due to the magnitude that Girasol was talking about.
Second, you could be overestimating him and he just did something fucking stupid and got banned because of it. That's certainly not out of the question.
Finally, he could have found a way to make it not useless. I don't know how the glitch works in the first place so... *shrug*. There's a certain amount of overlap between this one and the second one in that he could have thought it was a good idea or that he could make it work... and it wasn't/didn't.

I don't give a whit about Tyler specifically, myself. My commentary applied to everyone. This was too pointless a thing to go full nuclear over. It was a novelty, at best.
It's not having what you want - It's wanting what you've got.

Is every1 forgetting about characters cards and the SS card set? o.o. I agree that this wasn't a harmful exploit; however, everyone keeps calling this a useless exploit when in fact it was extremely useful for level 200 cards.

Tyler should stay banned.
It's one thing if he is dedicated to the game got banned and admitted to it. It's another if he is dedicated to the game got banned and lied.

With that many people exploiting it they would have to do something and SS cards are hardly useful if your character is getting deleted in a few days.

I'm not going to comment much on the Tyler situation because it sounds like he did abuse the glitch, so he should be punished. Status aside, he has worked to improve the game and I agree that shouldn't be a freebie. I do, however, agree a punishment as hard as this is much overboard-- especially compared to others who abuse glitches, hack, steal, and ruin the gameplay/economy for others who just get away clean. But that's another issue..
I deeply respect you and what you do to communicate with our community, Girasol; . Especially on hard issues like this.
So I don't want this to sound too negative, but you keep responding about Tyler, but what I personally would like to hear about is
all of the bans given to innocent players.
I know you're reasoning on him, but please give me some reasoning or something for the others who did absolutely nothing.

I completely understand that. Say I released complete raw data logs, and Tyler then says we falsified them. Then what?
It will ALWAYS be a back and forth. No matter what we say or do, we will always be accused of lying.
I understand that players do not always trust the game company. I have been in your shoes (I have been online gaming since 1998!) I have felt wronged by a game company (SOE ) I have definitely felt that some things were unfair. But I have also been on the other side, specifically in cheats investigation for other games (though that's not my current job, thank God), for well over five years. You become very jaded. =/ And yet I still have faith in every player, and I still try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt...and I try to go the extra mile even though it's not my job (I am NOT Customer Service, guys), because I HATE to think someone could be wronged.
But there is no way for us to "win" this, nor do we really want to (what pleasure is there in "winning" an online argument against your own player, anyway? It is a rotten feeling.)
We aren't going to release Tyler's account. We aren't going to change our policy just for one person. He was well aware of the rules, and he still broke them.

I'm well aware of it, I do appreciate your input, it was made clear by Hime that he's boned for a lack of a better term. But, you wanted our opinion, there it is
EDIT: No one is holding you accountable for it either, at least anyone with half a brain, eh southperricans.
