North Korean video shows US in flames after missile attack

theGuardian Wrote:It begins benignly enough, with an image of a sleeping young North Korean man, and a genteel piano version of the US feel-good pop anthem We Are the World providing the musical backdrop.

But the YouTube video recently posted by Uriminzokkiri, North Korea's official website, quickly takes a more sinister turn as the man's dream continues into the realms of Stalinist fantasy.

Within seconds he is aboard a space shuttle, launched into orbit by the same type of rocket the North successfully launched in December. The shuttle orbits Earth, at one point passing over a jubilant and reunified Korean peninsula, before the focus switches to an unidentified city draped in the Stars and Stripes.

What appear to be missiles rain down on the city, setting fire to high-rise buildings in scenes reminiscent of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York.

"Somewhere in the United States, black clouds of smoke are billowing," the Korean-language caption says. "It seems that the nest of wickedness is ablaze."

The ease with which the North's dozing pilot circumnavigates the planet owes more to North Korea's ability in visual special effects than the reality of its space programme.

But the video, which has received a relatively modest 38,000 views since it was uploaded at the weekend, is a timely reminder of the growing threat posed by the regime's ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programmes.

South Korea's ambassador to the UN said on Tuesday a North Korean nuclear test was imminent, in protest at the condemnation and tougher security council sanctions that followed its rocket launch on 12 December.

Kim Sook said the test, which would be the North's third, after similar controlled nuclear detonations in 2006 and 2009, looked increasingly likely given the "very busy activities" taking place at the test site.

The UN has warned North Korea a nuclear test would invite "significant action" in response.

Kim said the security council, of which North Korea's only ally and major donor, China, is a permanent member, had given unanimous backing to further sanctions.

"They are very firm and resolute and I would expect very firm and strong measures to be taken in terms of format as well as in substance once they go ahead with such provocation" as a nuclear test, Kim said.

The latest sanctions resolution repeated international demands that Pyongyang abandon its nuclear weapons programme and refrain from further rocket launches.

But those threats appear furthest from the thoughts of the fictional shuttle pilot, who reappears at the and of the sequence, still fast asleep, his Japanese-made Canon camera by his side.

His dream will "surely come true", reads the caption. "Despite attempts by imperialists to isolate and crush us … never will anyone be able to stop the people marching towards a final victory."

Be scared. Be very scared.

Be scared of what? They may be able to lob a missle on us, and I dare them to execute it, but our defenses would be more than enough to obliterate technology that was once considered advanced, back in the 80's....

Actions speak louder than words. This, however, is just pure entertainment.

Unless they just start blowing nuclear weapons up randomly in the middle of nowhere. How good are your missile defenses doing at preventing a nuclear winter again?Rolleyes

If anyones crazy enough to do it, it would have to be NK

It was taken down due to... a copyright infrigement claim from Activision. Apparently, they used some of the CoD footage in the video. xd

Video is still up here though.

Ehm I know nothing about the lastest in weapon's technology so I don't know what armys are capable of right now, but even if USA deploys a laser cannon and blow the missile in the atmosphere or over the ocean, how is this not scary at all?

With stuff like the stumbling world economies going nuts to even WWIII starting against NK and whoever wants to join them, how is this something to laugh about?. I honestly don't know so please enlighten me.

Isn't Iran in a position near North Korea's? They hate USA+ got nuclear weapons.

For what I know, even if all armies banded together and took down NK in a day, the world economies would go nuts, plus all the contamination, deaths, etc.

This prolly is not the best time for me to be replaying Fallout 3 and MGS4. Tongue

I highly doubt Iran would side with North Korea, they'd really be against all odds siding with North Korea.

Also the likelihood of WWIII and the likelihood of WWIII being a nuclear war are extremely thin.

Huh?

Thats why checking them regulary and otherwise doing nothing is better, the whole country is a house of cards, plus "taking down" NK would do nothing to no one (or to most), from what it seems most the NK population likes their leaders (even if its by brainwashing) taking them down by force wont make them happy, the country pretty much adds nothing to the world and while you're taking them down I bet a whole lot of the population will give their life for their country meaning that by the end of the take down you'll only gain a chunk of land and free a few thousand people by killing millions, so yeah just let the house of cards crumble by itself (and I bet its close looking at how crazy they're getting at with the whole nuke and space program stuff).

I recall reading somewhere that the primary reason China still supports the DPRK is that in the event the country were to collapse or be extensively reformed, it would create a sudden influx of immigrants which in turn would disrupt their economy.

I can't remember it clearly but I'm pretty sure of hearing Iran has nuclear weapons.

In any case. what I am discussing here is not what would happen to NK if it dared to attack USA, but why some say it is something not to worry about and even to laugh? It's clear to me that if they did launch a nuclear attack, USA might be able to blow it up over a harmless place, and then even NK's innocent citizens might not live long enough to enjoy the overthrow of the goverment, but the concequences to the world afterwards will most likely be not good.

I also don't see how can this be some propaganda to help improve the image of the goverment to the people. Brainwashed and all, they must be aware what the word war means. In any country with some sense, if they are already doubting their goverment the promise of shortages, famine and deaths shouldn't be any more reassuring, and if NK is senseless enough for this to increase the trust on their goverment, then they are senseless enough to start war with all odds against.
