Thunda Wrote:Warcraft is a totally different situation, because in MS, the account fee is $0 from the beginning, and in WoW, you pay $50 for an account. For example, "asdlfkd" spamming "S> MESOS @ http://WWW.RANDOMPR0NSITEURL.COM $4343/bil FAST DELIVERY" would immediately become unprofitable if Nexon charged per-account and banned even every three days. Hackers also have nothing to fear except having to restart.
Of course, if they were more competent and we didn't see random bans such as the Hak bans a while back, I would suggest a hardware ban.
While I see what you're saying, theres still lots of advertisers and gold farmers on WoW, they do an area check and wisper every person in the area, if you play WoW youll get lots of adds/random party invites.
Theres also gold farmers in WoW, but they're real people and they dont hack, so your logic doesnt really apply.

No not everything. Programs that are made without a lot of care can.
DJB has written a mail daemon for which he guarantees that it is secure. (There are some problems with it that you could argue about how bad they are but there are no (known) real security problems within the program itself...)
I know this is a common excuse for programmers writing buggy code ("bugfree programs are impossible") but that's just wrong...

IP ban isnt lazer guided. If taking out 1 hacker costs them 10 legits, then there's little point in doing so.
Every program is insecure period. Dispite what others say, you cannot guarantee that it's secure. Even if you guarantees so, eg DJB, it doesnt mean it's secure. Programs are being coded base on packages/softwares from others, ie IO, OS etc functions. Those functions arnt being written by you. Most were written in a best effort manner to make it as secure as possible. Even a simple Hello World function uses certain bases, and unless you're ABSOLUTELY sure stuff like System.out.println/cout/printf, etc are secure, you cannot say your program is secure. The internals are mostly unknown territories to us.
There is however, the number 1 golden rule to programming, which has been expressed as an example in this thread: A program can be considered secure when it costs more resources to carry out a task than the values gained by cracking it. Eg, if it costs you 20K to break into a safe just to steal a diamond worth 15K, would you do it?
There's a balance between maintenance and development. Better development = less maintenance required. For Nexon, they need to have active GMs banning hacking accounts. Many, including myself suggested this from day 1. A script is only as good as its knowledge. An anti-virus company cannot predict what the next virus is, they can only find a way to eliminate it AFTER it exists.
As for hiring 1 person to reprogram the client, this has to be the worst joke I have ever heard.

If it is runnable, then it is crackable. Apply some common sense to the case: If the computer understands what to do, when why can't a human? We were the ones who made the computer and its machine-code, so being able to understand a code and eventually change parts of it is always possible.
A mail daemon is a net-based server-program and will reply to packages sent in by sending packages back. But since this program runs on another computer, the daemon can't be hacked by others unless it sends itself in a packet by receiving a special type of packet. And we all know it'll be completely idiotic to program that into the mail daemon.
I'm not completely sure about the definition of a bug, but it's probably in the lines of "undocumented feature" or "feature not intended by the creator". That, however, is possible to create.

However, it seems to be that those gold farmers also resort to hacking WoW accounts to get gold to sell as well, which is why you keep hearing account security notices and stuff. Fortunately though, at least Blizzard will actually try to help recover lost items/gold, and I almost never heard about NEXON doing this in MS.
And by the way, do those gold farmers also hack MS accounts to get gold to sell as well? I do remember the MapleSEA hacking incident, but I'm not sure if those accounts were hacked to sell the mesos, or hacked for other reasons.

I remember the first day I got my broadband, I had a blocked IP. Because it just won't let me log on at all. I reset my router and it worked perfectly fine. IPs here get shuffled every time you get connected, so IP ban is a totally stupid idea. I never hacked, but at 1 stage I was still IP banned while I never did anything.
Be thankful that you don't have the mass hacker breakout like some people mentioned. There are always gonna be people who make hacks, and there is just nothing you can do about them. Slow them down, yeah... stop them... no way...

There's always about 100 hackers who get right on each version, and they always use the same over-populated maps. I like when a vaccer comes to my channel, it saves me the trouble of mobbing

"I hate you gms"
etc...
Personally, i'd ban anyone who whispered me after 5 minutes of that pomegranate.
GMs can't be whispered.
With all these threads about hacking coming up, it seems as if a hacking outbreak is beginning.
