Alien socket creator cannot be used

Describe the problem. Be as specific as possible!:
I'm not 100% sure this is a bug or me not using the item right but I bought an alien socket creator today and went to use it on my Renegade Maple Manabreak and it gave me a message saying "cannot be used on this item". I found it strange because I added sockets (the old way, through Bo) to a Legendary Maple Manabreak with no issue. I thought perhaps it's because it's a Renegade weapon and proceeded to try the socket creator on other equipment, each one giving the same message. I even attempted to use it through the legendary spirit skill UI thinking it could be because the items were equipped that that was what caused the issue and still no luck. I asked a buddy if he knew of any limitations to it and he said he knew of none. So I am wondering if this is actually a glitch that anyone else has experienced (and if so, if they know of any way to fix it) or if this is my lack of knowledge of the item.

I'm fairly sure you're supposed to double click the socket creator, and then drag and drop the equip into the box to make the socket. It doesn't work like a scroll.
