I not realy moved one way or another by this. The main reason I take a side in the whole gay rights debate is because I have friends that are gay (including FrozNlite <3). I want what makes them happy.

I agree that it's not particularly meaningful to be proud of your deterministic traits, but LGBT pride can be placed in their willful (in some occasions, courageous) choice to come out, given that it actually can be detrimental at least and dangerous at most to the person's life.

The biggest facepalm about this, however, is the fact that gay pride parades being overly stereotypical wouldn't be a huge fucking deal if people weren't stupid and didn't immediate associate gay with rainbow flamers. This same argument you're all making against pride parades for what they "depict" of gays is the same fundamental argument behind telling a girl to wear less revealing/tight clothing when she goes out, so she "doesn't get raped."
No. To stop rape, get men to stop raping. To stop negative LGBT associates, educate those making them by opening their minds to the true diversity of the LGBT population.

Gay pride exists as a counterculture to a previously heterocentric society. You can think it's wrong to be proud of something you were born into, and that's fine, but you must understand that there is a reason for its existence.

Isn't pride the most dangerous amongst the "7 deadly sins"? Just sayin'.

No, hubris is.
It's referred to as pride by people, or to people assumed to be, too stupid to know the difference, and yet ironically all the more likely to succumb to it.
It's not having what you want - It's wanting what you've got.

Isn't hubris just another word for pride? Why split it up into a hundred different terms in various different languages that all mean essentially the same thing? I mean, sure, ranks of severity exist, but a ton of different types of "pride" can be used as a negative, like narcissism, or vanity, or intense patriotism. I suppose lumping it all together isn't necessarily the best way to deal with things, but wouldn't a whole community of people (gays, in this case?) participating be considered group pride? That's generally a bad thing, looking at history as an example.

I told him "Did you know that Obama has claimed this is LGBT pride month?"
he said "Do i get free cinema tickets out of it?"
Pretty much sums this up, haha

No, hubris is an excess of pride. It is to pride as agape is to like, as drowning is to being damp.
Specificity exists because distinctions exist.
If we all used the most general term for everything possible no one would understand what anyone meant.
If anything the world needs vastly more words because I'm sick of every positive feeling people have towards one another being bastardized down to "love", diluting any meaning the word has in English because it now means virtually anything and can be misconstrued rather easily because it boils down to what the hearer assumes someone means. That's not communication.
We wouldn't be having this semantic argument right now if it weren't for people sloppily degrading into generalities to the point where a term is now ambiguous because it could be a positive or negative thing depending on how you choose to interpret it, which rather makes my point for me.

Fair enough. I'm sure no two people have the same exact meaning for any given word. For me, all of the derivatives of pride have a negative connotation, from a sparse nearly indifferent pride to an intense "I'll kill you if you disagree" pride, I just think of it as putting blinders on a person at very best. I think of a lot of emotions that way, honestly...

It's just a commonly used appeal to voters. It has precedent.

Self esteem is pride at it's more primitive and pure. The true and original meaning as it were. The term had to be created because of the connotations the original term began to accrue as it's meaning blurred.
