Okay so basically someone told me that for 3rd job you no longer need a Dark Crystal. Is this complete bull or what?

It's true, Dark Crystals are no longer required for the 3rd job advance.

The only exception is Cygnus Knights, where you need 30 Mateon Tentacles. Other than that you won't need any items for 3rd job advance.
