I'm doing the best I can -- I'm not exactly the sexiest, most confident guy in the world so things like this just aren't easy for me, at least as easy as everyone makes it seem.

It's not easy, but it's important to push through that and maintain confidence. It appears you're trying pretty hard and that's good, be persistent. It sounds like she's not aware of how you feel about her at all, which is explainable by the fact that she appears to be an overachiever and thus is completely distracted by her studies to realize what you're actually saying. So be more blunt imo. I'd tell her that I like her and i'd really like to spend some time with her before the semester is completely over. Is she free for a casual dinner at this nice sushi bar you know after finals? Think of it like a detox evening to let the finals settle past and look forward to the summer and on.

Zzzzzzz, clearly you don't see that she is very competent and takes her academics very seriously. As such, i'm sure she is capable of doing well on her finals, in accordance with undoubtedly her acceptable pre-finals grade, and spending a little time with a guy she's gotten to know and enjoy the company of.

Confidence is key. It's the reason women typically prefer jocks over nerds in highschool (yeah, not always the physical issue).

And not really, some people really do just take studying that seriously and don't want to waste any time at all.

Phoning her wasn't a bad option, don't listen to what they say. Walking to her place to ask her on a date is absolutely ridiculous, haha. Phoning is the next best thing, texting or facebook messages are pathetic. Wait until after exams and then do it. Remember DO NOT UNLOAD ON HER. It's really late now and it's unlikely that anything will happen but at the very least it's some good experience and you could have an enjoyable dinner.

We know that feel, bro. If you want to be persistent, which I hope you do, try following up on her wordings and invite her again after whatever's happening "this weekend". It could've been a polite excuse, or it could've been a legitimate reason, you won't know until you've tried again.

And just in case, bring out all your pessimism and pose possible bad turns of event here so we can sketch out countermeasurements for each of them, since it seems to me you kinda suck at both perseverance (when things don't go as planned, you often back away, don't you?) and impromptu improvisation.

Asking her out in person would be the best, although, as Sarah said, don't walk to her house, just ask her whenever you're at school or whatever. I'd say ask her to lunch, dinner's for after you're actually dating.
