In fact, I leave the game in window mode, so there shouldn't be anything changing with the game like it would be if I were playing in full screen and alt+tab'ed in and out.

From the looks of it, and experience, it looks like one of the many in-game graphics glitches caused by Xfire's in-game chat. This is probably a rare thing to happen, too. I got a good laugh out of it.
But then again, I haven't used Xfire in ages. Hmm.
