Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

People still go to movie theaters to watch movies? Well color me surprised.

From what I've see/heard of these movies and the plot involved with them, I say they all are fairly ridiculous. First you have a movie with the most top-notch action heroes of our time(The Expendables) who's premise is that of pretty much every single action movie ever made:They are part of an elite squad of mercenaries out to dispose of some evil dictator or crazy guy in charge of an army or oil company. If you're expecting story, you will get very little in the way of an intelligent one in most action movies. But hey, people will pay to see explosions.

Then you have Eat, Pray, Love, which in all ways should not be a movie. This is like Julie & Julia in context, a woman sees her life is full of depression and goes on a wonderful journey to search for her soul or be felt up/have sex with some hot Cabana-boy looking actor. Like in the first one, you will not find story, you will find nothing. The only people who see this movie are middle-aged women who like Julia Roberts no matter what horrible piece of pomegranate movie she is in.

The other three I have no real quips about. One is a cop comedy, which they seem to be remaking now more than ever(perhaps the producer has watched too much Lethal Weapon), another is a movie about an investigator that goes into other people's dreams, and the other one is a teen-romance-comedy with outlandish movie effects and fist-fights. All in all Scott Pilgram is the most original and should be in top spot if you think about the competition.

I would not have ever expected Scott Pilgrim to top the box office. It's very much oriented to a niche audience. It's for us young folks that've grown up on video games and comics and all things nerd. "Original" is hard to turn into a box office titan. Hollywood likes the familiar and accesible because the general consumer likes the familiar and acccesible. They want to know that they're likely to enjoy whatever the movie is before they buy that ticket. This is why Hollywood loves a franchise or a familar actor or director or well-read source material. Original movies that don't have a marketing juggernaut, technical gimmick, or strong cast/director generally need a big boost from winning Oscars or other awards, or somehow achieving cult status down the line.

It was better than baysplosions at least. I love baysplosions mind you.

A fellow critic said it perfectly I think. "Is it a romantic comedy? Is it a chick flick? This is silly, since, in truth, it’s neither. It’s simply a Julia Roberts movie, often a lovely one."

When you think about all the teen-romance-comedy we've had lately it's not really original. One awkward boy, check. One attractive girl, check. Throw them in some type of wacky scenario and you have a movie on your hands!

Scott Pilgrim isnt unique for its plot (Though fighting evil ex boyfriends is fairly unique I guess), its unique for its style, theres no movie like it in terms of style and effects, I'd have watched this if it had a worse plot just for the way it presents itself.

Yeah, I admit the style they did it in was really good and interesting.

You can't convey style very well to an uninitiated audience watching a trailer. What a shame.

- There tagline jokes were horrible (I'm a little bi-furious... man that's awful, maybe it was meant to be "that bad" to be corny and funny but it just wasn't in my mind)
- I don't like Michael Cera, i just don't like him... to me he's not the underdog anymore just a pathetic loser like Blarb in Mallcop. Don't get me wrong he's great at portraying himself as a loser but he does it so much I root for him to lose so he can just give up and move on with his life.
- The "comic book" look is interesting but if i turned down watching Avatar because I knew it was a sh*t movie with a pretty face a "comic book" looking movie isn't going to get me off my ass anytime soon.

I'm betting i can predict the movie, he's a loser, loser finds "hot" girl, he falls in love, goes on a journey and kicks ass a majority of the time, false tension builds as he almost loses near the end only to either triumph or fail but still "win" in the end by some deus -ex-machina BS anyone with half a brain could have predicted in the first 30 minutes of watching the movie.

Ramona...hot?!? Blasphemy.
Journey? Not really. It's all in the one town, and he continuously goes back to his home.
Kicks ass a majority of the time? He fails majorly on multiple occasions.
False tension...I guess I can give you that one? You'd have to see it to know what I'm talking about.
Predicting within the first 30 minutes? ...I don't think ANYONE predicted the ending within the first 30 minutes of the show. If you did, BRAVO!

Napoleon Dynamite was never funny.

Well, it helps that the ending's different than the comic. I just wish they hadn't literally copied the scene from her head and revolved it around that, but I'm thankful that they didn't have the whole vanishing thing, because they wouldn't have been able to explain it.

I dont know anyone who actually did enjoy Napoleon Dynamite.

Also if you dont like Comic Books or Retro Video games, Scott Pilgrim wont appeal to you, however the corny one liners are few and far between.
The over the top ridiculous fights playing out like a video game boss battle is the main draw of the movie, at least for me.
Michael Cera is a meh actor, I cant say he is anywhere near my favorites, but I dont really have a problem with him.

I liked it. I thought it was good. I thought a lot was left out but it was long and they did what they could. Before I saw the movie I knew I would like the books much more and the movie would leave stuff out, but some stuff it left out I felt was important. I could write a whole review on this movie but I don't want to. It's not my favourite movie ever, but I liked what they did with it, despite the only real video game reference I noticed was the Zelda music. I felt almost every character was a lot different except Scott, Stephen Stills and Wallace. It was great, but I'm sure a lot of people were confused about the whole reason behind the league of evil exes and all that.

Blah.

Oh and also, I loved seeing that Pizza Pizza they went too, because I went there and ate with my friend during the 6th book release party close to where Young Neil and Knives were sitting.
