So Southperry...
I have taken it upon myself to get my friend into some of the better (well, ones that I liked) recent shows (past 3 years or so) by showing him the first episodes of each. However, I was wondering if you had any suggestions. I've decided to show him:
Seitokai no Ichizon
Gurren Lagann
Clannad
Umineko
and maybe Hanamaru Kindergarten, though he's more into action and comedy stuff, I think.
He's somewhat of an anime fan, but hasn't seen anything lately, so I think as long as what you suggest is recent he won't have seen it.

...wat. I would never recommend that one anime in a billion years. Why? Because there's so many obvious flaws with the series that it obvious dragged and got boring. The first episode was decent, but I think you can do better than that. Since you say last three years, I believe Lucky Star will fall under that since it aired around the same time as Gurren Lagann. Now there's some quality slice-of-life comedy; but eh- chocolate cornets were not the best way to begin an anime series. Another decent comedy I could recommend is Hayate the Combat Butler, and since he's already somewhat knowledgeable in anime, he might like this one without going "wat" every five seconds for every reference. And hey- Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is absolutely amazing and a truly unique comedy. My bad if he's seen any of these.
Let's see: how interested would he be in Bakemonogatari? Fantastic first episode there, in my opinion. Also, Baccano and the currently airing Durarara! are both excellent series to recommend; though Baccano's beginning wasn't that great to me.
Hm, and as for action: has he seen Code Geass? Not an anime I exactly liked, but worth recommending and had a pretty nice first episode.

Seitokai no Ichizon is there because I liked it, and he usually likes the same things as me... Otherwise, I don't know how good he'd be with references to other things, since he hasn't seen that much- mainly only mainstream or popular shows. I'd show him Lucky Star, but like you said... cornets.
And @Dyxanije- I don't think I've seen any of those except for a few episode of Spice and Wolf, but I'll look into them. I'll probably be the one who ends up watching them instead, but... XD

Yu Yu Hakusho.
I'm serious.
Actually, recent anime? Er.... you might not like the stuff I like, same for your friend. Not like recent-recent, but it's anime I have enjoyed:
-Yu Yu Hakusho
-Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (new)
-Kanon (same creator as Clannad)
-AIR (^)
-Rurouni Kenshin

i think you should show your friend naruto. naruto is not just a cartoon i think that the show does a good job in exemplifying humanity. i know there are fillers but the story comes very close to the manga and i think that is very good. naruto is not just a show for kids but even for young adults from old to young. going back to what i said about humanity it is probably the best show in showing how society really is. my favorite quote from the show is "peace can only be achieve through pain" how do we accept people change for the better or for the worse when we love them? i hope i made my case in naruto being the best anime and if you do not think he will like it then perhaps you could make him watch code geass is has a lot of suspense and action and the plot is very good

Heh. I watched dubbed Yu Yu Hakusho when I was younger, and as far as I remember he was really into dubbed Kenshin. I think he's seen AIR, but I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen any of FMA:B yet, and he liked the original FMA, so... I might just show him episode 2 of that.
And we both used to watch dubbed Naruto, so no. Nice try though.

Just as Bleach embodies man's quest to break free from a life that is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short, and transcend into a globalized, peaceful economy full of international unity.
Denno Coil was technically within the last 3 years.
Soaring Cake Girl? Iunno. Dyx's list is solid as usual.
