The Human Footprint
#1
I've started watching this thing on Hulu, and it's actually really interesting. Here's the video for American viewers:

[hulu]sTxuHH1PCJk9ZAePGJ3E4A[/hulu]

Some statistics:

-We influence 83% of the World's Land

-We use 3,796 diapers in our first 2 years of life
1,898 Pints of crude oil
715 pounds of plastic
Pulp of 4 and a half trees
That's how much raw material is used in just those diapers.

As a nation (America) we:
-Go through 1,649,630,427 pounds of food a day.
-Drink 178,000,000 cans of Soda a day.
-Generate 246,000,000 tons of waste a year.
-Use 560,000,000,000 gallons of water to wash our cloths a year (That flows over Niagara Falls in 11 days).

Materials for an average home:
64 trees to supply all the wood in a home which is 13,837 feet of framing lumber.
11,500 square feet of siding
17 tons of concrete
5,500 pounds of interior wall materials, wood paneling, and insulation
400 pounds of copper piping
18 windows
30 gallons of paint
---------------------------------------------

ALL of what is below this is based on what is used in an average lifetime of 77 years.

We eat/drink:
13,056 pinks of Milk
2.5 tons of beef (6 Bulls)
1.7 tons of pork (4 Pigs)
2.3 tons of chicken (1,423 Chickens)
1.5 tons of eggs (19,826 eggs)
9,917 pounds of Potatoes
3,376 loafs of bread
-5,442 hot dog rolls
-12,129 hamburger buns
14,518 candy bars
1,056 pounds of sugar
5,067 Bananas
12,888 Oranges
43,471 cans of soda
We'll go though:
156 toothbrushes
389 tubs of toothpaste
656 bars of soap
198 bottles of shampoo
272 sticks of deodorant
35 tubes of hair gel
1,277,043 gallons of water
-We'll also go though 567,575 gallons of sewage.

-We take 28,433 showers, that's 700,000 gallons of water.

-We'll watch 12 years and 183 days of Television.

-An average man will spend $52,972 on clothing.

-We will move about 10 times.

-Also, we'll go through 15 computers.

 6,000,000,000

---------------------------------------------

Anyways this is only an hour of the video, it's an hour and a half long. I'm done watching it for now. Probably the most interesting this about it is the fact that they represent all of this stuff visually. They actually laid 13,056 pints of Milk in a street. It was amazing. Sure, some of may not drink milk, but these are all just base averages of what we go though, granted some of us may use more of something than others.

Well, what are you thoughts?

I remember watching that when it aired. I only watched it for the COOL things they did with all the products. Entertainment, comedy value. Otherwise, I honestly don't care.

Sure it's interesting, but there's really no point in knowing this.

Most of it will be forgotten within 10 minutes of hearing/reading about the statistic. It's just so irrelevant to what we do in our immediate daily lives that it's not something that should be thought about in a serious manner.

So I guess you're not one of the hundreds of profoundly impacted people around the world. Good for you!

Actually I don't care either xD I already know about the human footprint, and I don't need numbers to know that humans have pretty much touched every corner of the globe.

This kinda highlights how insanely wasteful disposable diapers are. If you use washable cloth diapers you could save 1900 pints of oil or 700 lb of plastic >_>

By showering once a week, I cut down from 29,000 showers to about 4000, representing about 600,000 gallons of water saved. pwnd

Well, what are you thoughts?

I saw this in my honors bio class when we did ecology.

We came up with the idea that the only way to counter-act these things would be this:

You'd have to be a nudist who only eats once in his/her lifetime then drinks their own and eats thier crap. They'd walk on foot and if it came time for a baby, the baby would wear a diaper made from corn stalks. They'd live in the wilderness with no T.V., computer, or cell phone. They'd never brush thier teeth.

Idk about America, but in my country water is considered recyclable.

I wonder how much more milk I drink than the average person? My mom buys 3 gallons of milk every week and a half cause I'm a milk whore lol. I drink at least 3 big glasses a day and always start out my day with a bowl of cereal (except on weekends when I eat fried rice and scrambled eggs).

I loveeeeeee a cold glass of fresh milk more than anything in the world Biggrin.

Dude...are you my long lost brother or something? Do you put spam/sausage in it too? Glitter

Anyway...at least 4 glasses of milk, twice that in water, a day. Never touched soda since last year. F'uck yeah, that's two less sodas per day that America drinks.
