Antivirus suggestions

I need a new antivirus for my new laptop, so I come to you southperry in hopes that your knowledge will guide me into making the right decision.

I don't have tons to spend on antiviruses, but I do have a copy of Norton 360 I can use. I don't know if its necessarily a better program then some of the free antiviruses like AVG or Avast!, both of which I have used and found to be to my liking.

My main concern is needing a firewall. I"m not exactly internet savvy when it comes to going to websites that I probably shouldn't be at. So yeah. Something with a firewall would be nice ( I tried Comodo once and everytime I would start maple everything would crash..not a good thing because MSN + Maple in windowed = )

I don't know if this is needed but my computer has an intel core2 duo CPU at 2.26 GHZ and 4 GB of RAM. 1 GB of onboard video memory, and is installed with Vista 64 bit. (Yes, I know. 64 bit windows sucks balls)

Please give me some advice. I'm so desperate.

imo the built-in firewall should be sufficient. Also when you're installing Norton 360, you should be able to choose advanced installation and install only the features that you need.

Also getting spybot and scanning your computer regularly for spyware and adware is recommended.

Why are you so concerned about the firewall? I don't think a friewall can help much preventing keyloggers. Most keyloggers are installed "willingly" unknowningly by the end user. The keyloggers usually pose as some sort of MS update or some important plug in you have to install to allow you to view the page.

I use AVG, Spybot and Ad-Ware. It's pretty sufficient to me. o.o

You can never exactly detect keyloggers. I suggest you to just never open/download unknown files/progrmas from non-official sites. A daily or weekly computer scan is suggested. If you're really worried, then you can choose to switch your Internet connection off whenever you're not using it. It prevents unwanted stuff to reach you while you're away.

Most of the time, it's not always the fault of something/someone around you. It is up to you to chose what is right and what's not. So, being conscious of what you're doing on the Internet is crutial.

A good firewall however will detect when something that shouldn't be is accessing the internet. I got hacked by someone who I knew, (never figured it out who.) and I'm guessing it was via keylogger. Chances are I trusted someone I shouldn't and let install something I shouldn't onto my laptop. I know it was someone I knew, because they hacked my skype and pretended to me, and they hacked my deviantART and filled all the info slots with "I am a whore."

I would just in general like to prevent something like that from happening again.

Or in worse cases, did you save any passwords on those sites? Maybe someone could have just went on your computer and press "Log In" to have access to your accounts.

I would recommend that you get rid of norton 360 asap and install nod32. All review sites say that norton gives off alot of false positives and generally slows down system performance by a substantial margin.

If you want a free antivirus, then avg will suffice.

As for a firewall, zonealarm free is probably the best. The built in windows firewall is adaquet if you are behind a router (most have built in filters/firewalls), but if you are connecting directly to the internet, then zonealarm is what I recommend.

I personally use McAfee, and it's really good. Like most programs, it automatically detects viruses, torjans, etc, and deletes them. I personally like how it does an automatic scan, though.

McAffee is terrible. Most anti-virus programs just hog up RAM. If you absolutely have to have one, get AVG.

Get avast :O

I like Avast, myself. The voice can get kind of creepy, but it does its job well.

The Enterprise version of McAfee or Symantec(Norton) are clean and stays out of sight.

No wonder my dad installed it, it was the "best". Which probably means the worst.
