Just passed by, wondering how much changed...

So I haven't played in what seems ages now, The last time I played was when masteria just came out, I remember doing all those quests for the chair in new leaf city and everyone was talking about masteria being the next big thing.

So I'm just wondering here... What's up with maple? what changed since then? I tried looking up the subject but it seems like so much has changed that I can't keep up.
