Jamie_Kurosawa Wrote:Has anyone ever had a case where a DVD drive somehow got knocked out by a malware, virus, etc.? I have a PC in the shop that the DVD drive is fairly new but somehow got bricked by a piece of malware according to the user. Could this be the case or could the drive just be a bad drive? I'm only asking for reference purposes and getting a second opinion. It could be. It's either it's blocking input to that drive, or the drive itself is bad.

Okay, here's so far what I have tried:
Firmware flash... could not perform. No firmware was available from the original manufacturer. Checked Power Supply... power supply is more than adequate for this PC and shows no faults on tester. Used original 40-pin IDE cable to read lone drive. Nothing appeared on POST. Replaced IDE cable from 40-pin to 80-pin. Nothing reported on POST. Used IDE cable tester to check IDE port of motherboard. IDE port recognized and operational. Attempted to use firmware extractor/reader from DOS SCSI/IDE utility disk. Drive not detected by low-level firmware and drive access tools. I'm thinking the drive could be dead at this point and needs replacing. Thanks for the input.

Maybe look for new driver installation or an update for it if one was ever released. But most likely it sounds dead.

Update:
DVD Player Drive was in fact dead. Secondary CD-R/W Drive has since been replaced as well with a single DVD-R/W drive. Secondary speed issue problems were also due to vastly underpowered graphics de-celerator S3 ProSavage DDR chip and low RAM amount. Upgraded system to a GeForce FX 5200 AGP and 1 GB DDR-266 RAM. No more issues and customer was happy.

Old (cheap) DVD Drives have the nasty habit of dieing after 2~3 years of use, because of all the cheap components used inside these drives...
That's why I never buy cheap B-label components ever... They work "ok" for like 1~2 years, but after that, it's always those random malfunctions...

Update: New problem...
After getting the PC home, the customer brought it back saying it crashed upon start up and would BSoD each reboot or freeze at log-in. Worked fine when I had it... I'm going to recheck the Power Supply and see if it might have any problems. It was labeled high enough for the GeForce 5200, and everything else. I just hoping it's not a motherboard issue. I've had countless issues with VIA chipsets and the crappiness they represent and this unit has one of those.

funny how you fix one problem and gets another.
Again, this computer is probably ancient, w/e the PSU says is probably not accurate anymore. |
