THS Band 2010 Preformance

This is the band at THS. I did participate. It wasn't our best run, but we got into state.

I want anyone who knows anything about marching to rate and give what you think is positive/negative to this.

And any opinions are appreciated.

Not for funhouse, and grading for this is very odd and percurliar. Most people's grading systems are odd and different. I was just wondering if anyone did HighSchool Marching, and would leave an "intelligent" opinion or reply.

- A lot of the solos sounded really off to me.
- Articulation was good, but there were some really noticeable bad notes in there.
- On a few of the parts, I felt the brass was way too overpowering. I don't know if it's supposed to be like that in the song, but that's what I felt.
- For trombones, I noticed some of their notes weren't consistent and sort of dropped in tone. While I understand this happens while marching, they need to work on their breath control to prevent it.
- Snares need to work a bit more on their timing. In some parts they were just a bit off from each other.

I don't know about the marching, but the music was pretty bad overall to be honest. There are good portions, BUT quite a fair bit of it sounded off especially right from the start of each part (though I don't know if the piece is supposed to be like that). The Brass instruments are too loud, and at a few points completely drowns out everything else. Which brings me to my next point; the volume is a little inconsistent. I don't know if it's a problem that surfaced due to the camcorder's microphone or otherwise, but if it's the latter it's a very serious problem. Some segments sound a little shaky as well.

I guess I probably sound rather harsh, but I'm very critical when it comes to music.

You all basically hit the needle on the head. There are many issues, We covered some of these.

>The solos are, well solos, ment to be the attention grabber. But A lot of them haven't practiced enough to play theirs 100%. The Mellophone alwayse has issues with pitch, and trumpet solo's are either, wrong, or ,right. wrong most of the time.

I agree, Wasn't our best preformance. It's all songs based on the #1 , lol, and the vocals are redone. Brass is way loud, then again woodwinds really can't be as loud. Volume is consistent, in some parts, maybe the problem is the camera.

More suitable for Speakeasy under a "Marching Band Performance Thread". I'll have ours up in a few days once I get the official recording. Unfortunately Michigan does not have a state competition for MSBOA Marching Bands, but we did receive a Division I, the highest, for the first time in over 10 years.

Your band needs a more rounded sound, we have brass overpowering everything. This wouldn't be a big issue if tone wasn't awful. Surprising you qualified for States, but your band has good marching form. Soloists need to be prouder. Focus on articulating clearly so that we can hear the definition between notes. Also, your Drum Majors have the weirdest and most unreadable conducting style ever. They seriously need to understand how hard it is to define beats if they conduct in circles.

Curious-What do you play?

I play Trumpet, Baritone, and Frenchorn. And the Drum Majors style is based off, of, a very angry black percussionist known as Mr.Matlock. Their conducting is weird, but it's how they were taught. I think it's odd, but their aiming for style points as well as conducting.

There are 3 judges, Band is highest overall amt. of points.

You may have this format, but not everyone else does.

I understand your point, articulation is terrible. One of our soloist just freaking loves what he's doing, everyone else takes it too seriously and doesn't relax about it. Their alwayse trying too hard, which makes them fail.

State is next week, I'm worried that if they don't chill out it won't go well.

Competition was tonight in Alabama, it was pretty bad, drum major litteraly screwed up. Not to mention she has to constantly use a metranome to even practice, sort of infuriates me how we have a Junior instead of one of the Seniors do the lead.
