would installing the latest version of directx cause any problems for a pirated version of windows?

No. Microsoft has actually said they will allow any updates to be installed on an illegal copy, but you will not be able to get certain downloads from Microsoft that require a valid copy for authentication.

You should have DirectX 9.0c if you are on XP, and Vista and 7 should have DirectX 11 (provided you have Vista Service Pack 2).
