Help me with a riddle.

I once presented this riddle to my math teacher, he told me it was an old riddle but told me the answer, i just forget what it is.

The 2 dollars pocketed is part of the 27 dollars the 3 guys paid.

Something about that multiplication is off. I have it at the tip of my tongue but I just can't get it.
If it was $5 overcharge, they only needed to pay 25.
Giving 3 back is $28.

I want to know the answer too, obvious misdirection.

I never understood how this managed to trick people. It's not even that clever at being misleading.

25 dollars + 2 stolen = 27

30 - 27 = 3 dollars (refunded amount)

No money ever disappeared. Not even hard to trace the money if you disregard the "riddle's" misleading wording.

Misdirection - each man paid 9 dollars; 3 x 9 = 27; the bellhop took 2 dollars from that 27, leaving the hotel with 25.
