Stereograms

Old as the earth but I still haven't managed to see through one. Tips/tricks and gallery please.

My brain has gone through quite a bit f'ucking today, first the spinning left/right brain girl, now this.

Eyes close to screen, cross slightly, back away slowly.
wtp is this? I got focus but I can't tell what it is.... a flame maybe?

...either a ramp, or a stunted guitar.

How do you do it, CJ? I did the "staring through the pic at the centerpoint" bit and things started to move weirdly, but I couldn't see it.

EDIT: pineapple I think I saw something start glowing but it wasn't exactly a Tetris!

There are 2 ways to see stereograms. Just look at the picture at normal "range", lets say about 50cm.

- First method: Keep switching between crossed eyes view / normal sight while focusing on the image as a whole, don't try to see details, focus on is as a square, but keep looking at the "center of the image/square". You have to loose your "normal sight focus", but if you keep switching between crossed eyes and normal view a couple of times, and then "stare" at the picture again without crossed eyes view (don't focus your eyes too hard), you'll suddenly see the 3d depth in the picture.

- Second method (more difficult): just stare at the image as if you were dreaming away, stop focusing on the image, but keep looking at it (as a whole, again no details, but keep looking at the exact center of it). What you need to do is separate both eyes view (aka staring in the distance) till you get both paterns 100% on top of each other. It's a bit hard to explain, but just keep trying, it's the exact reverse method as method one, and also reverses the 3D effect.

With the ones I linked to there's little helper images to make it easier for you at the top and bottom. Cross your eyes to make them overlap and the hidden image should be more visible.
Mainly the trick is just to focus without uncrossing your eyes.
