Something I've been pondering.

When I was at a session, being trained in customer service, the person teaching said something that made me think. He noted that every time you give your eftpos card or something to the seller, they give it back, and you say thankyou. He noted that you've just given them YOUR money, and YOU are the one that said thankyou. That made me think, who should be the one saying thankyou? Should it be the seller, who has just received the other person's money, or should it be the customer, who has just received the other person's product. He thought it's pretty funny that the customer would thanks someone for taking their money. I think both should be saying thankyou, both have done a service for the other. What does Southperry think?

I'm assuming an eftpos is a kind of credit or debit card. Anyway, it's both or none. If you were giving it to a homeless person as a donation, but saying ty, then yes, it's weird. If you are receiving some good or service, then it is a trade, and both say ty (or none, considering it evens out and nothing changed).[/COLOR]

So a debit card (used like an instant check, in that it takes money directly from your bank account).

At my store we train our cashiers to say "thank you" after ever every transaction. We even have the most adorable little old Vietnamese woman working with us who says, "thank you for your support" with her cute little accent and it always makes the customers smile. I love her!

And yes, I do think that both parties should be courteous to each other. I'M LOOKING AT YOU, YOU DOUCHEBAG CASHIER AT SAFEWAY, THE MONEY I SPEND AT YOUR STORE PAYS FOR YOUR PAYCHECK YOU IGNORANT SON OF A MOTHER. When I go shopping, I do notice that cashiers do usually say "thank you" (except for Safeway Douchebag boy) so I'm not sure if it's a regional thing (I'm from San Francisco) or what.

To note, when I was a food runner (basically a waiter without tips but only delivered orders, didn't receive them), I would actually bow when I left tables. Wasn't even an overly classy restaurant, but damned if it didn't get the waiters I worked with tons of tips. Even got some myself a couple times (generally unheard of). Of course they'd joke with me about it, but I actually had people asking where I went when I quit. Little courtesies make customer service interactions that much more enjoyable, on both ends.

Anyway, technically speaking, it's a trade, so both parties benefit in a way that is useful to them. But it does seem kind of weird to reply "thank you" to a "thank you", so if the cashier said it, then whatever.

Yeah i have noticed this as well but i always assumed that they where saying thank you for giving there card back.

I always say thank you. You're thanking them for your purchase, as well as helping you check out your stuff (doing their job).
