HDD problems in laptop

Having a problem so I'm looking for some help. I'm mostly computer illiterate so bear with me a bit please.

When I turn on my laptop it goes through a dell start-up screnn then a black screen pops up with:

internal hard drive not found
to resolve this issue try to reseat the drive

Naturally I tried to reseat the drive but with no luck. After looking around a bit I'm starting to think that the hdd is dead.
The comp is only about 9 months old or so, a dell inspiron 1545 if it makes a difference.

So I guess my first question is does my assumption seem correct?

Second question is as far as replacing the hard drive is there anything special I need to look for besides it being an internal hard drive?

Something like that would be fine, you are probably still covered under warranty.

Have you tried listening to the hard drive? To see if it is really dead. Or maybe the connection is bad.

Probably covered under warranty but honestly I'd rather just replace it myself than wait the 4-6 weeks that dell is gonna take to replace it.

Like I said a bit computer illiterate I didn't even think about trying to listen to it, am I just listening for a whir or something? Would it making no noise rule out the chance that it is a bad connection? That was kind of my other worry.

Double post but I'd rather update with new info in a new post then edit my old one.

So I tried listening to it and I definitely did hear it making noise.

I think this means I have a connection problem then which will more then likely be over my head. So time to call dell. Thanks for saving me some time and money xtothel, never even occured to me to listen to it.
