So it's been about 3 years since I hopped on NetBattle. I believe it was shutdown, but someone remade it or something? Are either of these only competitors capable of holding 3rd gen MetaGame battles? I've tried 4th gen before, I was confused (due to not owning a single 4th gen game). I really missed 3rd gen competitive battling, and would totally like to give it another shot.
Heracross and Dragonite rocks!
Anyways, thanks for the help, guys.

I never tried ShoddyBattle. After NetBattle got shut down I just stopped playing Pokemon simulators.
In my opinion, the 4th gen battling is an improvement over 3rd gen. The only thing I find slightly annoying is all the spikes being used. Stealth rock makes you think twice before adding a flying type on your team.

Never claimed it wasn't an improvement. I'm just not accustomed to it, so of course my first reaction was something along the lines of "The f'ck?" when I first tried. Shoddy was weird. I hated the GUI, and the special/physical split thing wasn't like 3rd gen, so I was a bit confused at first. Not owning a 4th gen game made it harder to get used to it. For now, I'll probably stick to 3rd gen metagame since I'm more used to it and I can easily predict the movesets more often. Hmm.

I just started competitive battling in the 4th gen. I've played Pokemon before, but never competitively. Wasn't really anything stunning to me. Heck, I don't even have a 4th gen Pokemon game.
You really seem to stick with the old metagames.

I've played 3rd gen meta for about over a year, and had an online club based on it. So.. yeah. 3rd gen was fun to me, especially since I started out getting my ass beat left and right like nothing. Then slowly climbed up as I made better teams. 3rdgen♥

I played 4th gen competitively, not so much for 3rd gen.

I don't play competitive, but I like the physical/special split. Makes Pokemon like Weavile a lot more useful. I always liked Sneasel, but Dark/Ice was shitty as hell for a physical attacker.

Point taken. Sneasel wasn't exactly great, and I can see why the split would benefit some UU's. Thanks for that tidbit of information, actually. I might get a DS and buy myself HG/SS and Diamond.

4th Gen really changed a lot with the physical/special split. Like Dusk mentioned, Weavile finally got usable STABs and Gyarados/Salamence became beastly with their physical Waterfall/Outrage respectively. Also, Stealth Rock has made former threats like BellyZard practically unusable.
Dragonite is my favorite too, but it was generally regarded as inferior to Salamence until HG/SS gave it ExtremeSpeed. This let Dragonite fulfill certain roles that Salamence couldn't. Heracross has dropped tremendously in usage in 4th gen, especially since Scizor practically rules the OU metagame. It has better typing, arguably a better ability, and access to Bullet Punch/U-Turn.
If I were you, I would get HG/SS and Platinum, not Diamond. Platinum offers practically everything that Diamond/Pearl offers and more.
As for Shoddy Battle, it's basically the new Netbattle. It's fairly straight forward to use and doesn't take forever to download.

Wait, didn't Draggy had ES before? I thought it did in 3rd gen. Maybe I'm thinking of Flygon. <_< Flygon has Quick Attack, that's all I remembered. Great Reversal-counter. Thanks for the advice btw. Keeping that in mind.

Dragonite had ExtremeSpeed in Crystal version.

Yeah, it had it only in Crystal. They didn't keep it in 4th Gen for whatever reason. HG/SS brought it back. I think you get it the same way you did in Crystal, though I'm not certain.

You get it the same way, but I believe it can also be obtained as an egg move, but I recommend SRing for a good nature/IVs if you're planning to use it since it's not fully confirmed yet (Serebii lists it as an eggmove, but I'm still not sure until I've tried it myself). And be sure to get a male one, all just in case.
I've played on ShoddyBattle for a while, but I stopped because I like training up a team myself instead of just creating it(I do use pokesav on my flashcard version of Pearl so I can get eggs with good IVs as it took me a month last time I bred for IVs. I did have 31 in 2 stats though.) by entering numbers.

Dragonite can learn ES as an Egg move, but the only way to get it is to breed it with a Dragonite that already knows ES (i.e., the one that you get from Blackthorn).
