Software suggestions.
#1
I've been minimizing my software use to allow considerable speed boost since my computer doesn't have much space, but living without an anti-virus feels tiring after a while, so I guess I'm getting back on the right track again.
I'm looking for free downloadable softs to secure and enhance my computer, as for now, these categories come first, as they're on the top of my mind right now:
Note: free = free version (*looks around for Fiel*... make sure it's not warez Wink)

  1. Anti-virus (scanner + detector): currently leaning towards free AVG but I'll need to work around my DNS server to access their page.
  2. Spyware/Malware scanner: probably included in the AV package but if there's a separate good one I'll tap it.
  3. Download-enhancement: Internet Download Manager? Flashget?
  4. Disk Defragmenter: I've been using the one that comes with Windows, but I'm thinking there's better ones out there.
  5. Optimization tools: none. Perhaps some registry tweeting to promote lighter processing. Or perhaps a book telling me how to do it myself manually.
  6. Movie making/editing: currently using Windows Movie Maker. Glitter

Thank you.

If anything at least get spybot search and destroy. It's completely free. Past that, others would likely know about better anti virus than myself.

Oh I have it, I'm just using that to wipe my comp monthly though.

Personal favorites:

1) AVG.
2) Don't know what you mean by this
3) Auslogics or defraggler
4) Uh, eusing registry cleaner is pretty good for cleaning up your registry. Not sure what you're asking for here.
5) There's like no good free movie editing programs out there. The best of the best is vegas, and you have to pay for it.

2/ Programs that improve your downloading speed.
4/ There's a few features that are... extraneous and could be turned off to save space/memory/power for other stuff I use. I'm under the impression that someone has a good list of those and has compiled a program that automatically turns them off.

It seems I'm going to have to get AVG.

I use Firefox's DownThemAll for downloading.

For 2, I would suggest Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

Spybot runs pretty slowly, but it works pretty well. Malwarebytes is great from my experience.

These are my suggestions.

1. AVIRA, Avast!, or Microsoft Security Essentials (SURPRISINGLY GOOD). AVG is total bloat for a free Virus Scanner.
2. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I strongly recommend NOT getting Spybot S&S because according to recent reviews of the latest version, it blocks Spyware from being removed..
3. Flashget if you're not using Firefox, Downthemall! if you are.
4. UltraDefrag or MyDefrag. I suggest the latter.
5. Don't know.. I guess get a book I suppose.
6. WMM (WLMM if you're using Windows 7)

  1. avast! Home Edition
  2. Spybot - Search & Destroy
  3. None (Not used)
  4. MyDefrag
  5. BlackViper's Service Configuration
  6. None (Not used)

On the topic of security, I would also suggest using KeyPass for managing passwords.
