Help opening a laptop for repairs

My brother recently bought a new computer because his old one has a broken fan. We now have the broken laptop and are trying to figure out how to open it up so we can see what is broken and also be able to repair it efficiently. The computer is a HP Pavilion ZV 6000. Also, would it be better to have a store repair it, or would we save money by repairing it ourself

In my experience opening laptops is as simple as taking out screws. Lots and lots of little, tiny, annoyingly different sized screws. This was on an 8 year Dell that I just wanted the HDD out of and wasn't willing to pay the $600 for a new motherboard. I'm going to assume for arguments sake that whatever warranty you had on the old laptop is now expired and that's it's actually a bad fan and not who-knows-what. Price-wise it shouldn't take more than an hour (at worst) in a PC shop, so (fanPrice + hourFee) maybe $70, and you get a work guarantee. DIY is fanPrice and no guarantee. Personally I'd pay the money for a shop repair.

My laptop's fan didn't break, but it got so dirty that it wasn't working well, and the computer was overheating. My laptop is out of warranty.

After researching my computer's manual and a lot of DIY sites, I decided to send it to the shop. It'll depend on your model, but in mine, the fan was just about the hardest thing to get to. You had to remove almost everything except the HDD, IIRC, including the motherboard. I wasn't going to risk it.

I got some RAM put in at the same time and the whole thing cost about $150, maybe $50 of which was directly for the fan cleaning. It only took an hour of labor, so it wasn't that expensive. Those guys know how to take out the motherboard without frying it with static or something, so yeah.

The bottom line is, if you care about the laptop more than about $100 worth, I'd go ahead and send it to the shop.

That is what i pretty much figured now i got to get my dad to think the same thing. The computer is def worth over 300 bucks so ill pay for it to get fixed. Thanks for your help.
