El Shaddai

Any of you guys ever play this? I had passed it over as a shooter -- sequel to Call of Juarez or something because it sounded like that to me. But now that the VGAs are over I've heard a ton of bitching about it not being nominated so I decided to look it up and WOW. It's beautiful. I know it was made by the DMC and Okami teams which is awesome, too.

But I'm wondering if I could get some more information on it. Specifically if it has side quests or you know, something other than just being linear. Also length and thoughts.

The game is of course HEAVILY stylized. But I think a lot of people believe that the combat and platforming is all very mediocre and don't provide that much. It's a linear game, follow the storyline. There are no rpg elements iirc?

You actually don't see a health bar until you beat the game (lol).

It's shiny, but still looks like a standard platform game.

Been meaning to pick this up for a while. The whole health bar thing is your armor, and the story is pretty interesting (if buttf'uck weird).

The demo is up on PSN if you wanna try it.

Oh really?! Thanks! Didn't even think of that. Awesome.

Edit: Well.. that was weird. Short. Strange. Not sure what to think. I know for sure that I don't want to pay $50 for it though.

They really want to charge $50 for that? wow....

Battlefield 3 - Top of the line graphics, huge mutiplayer battlefield, big title made by a big company. sure $50 I can understand
Sidescrolling platform game - $50 what the hell? lol

You can probalby find it used for cheap somewhere, considering the poor sales.

The battle system threw me off, but I kinda get how it works with timing and all that mess. Toss up between this and Rayman Origins for first purchase of 2012...

And it's not a bunch of side-scrolling either. I watched a couple of battles n' levels and there's only like 2 memorable periods of sidescrolling, the one Sarah posted being one of them.

The things you post about video games make my head explode because it's like you have no idea about anything at all.

$60 is the baseline price for ALL new ps3/xbox games and El Shaddai is new (August 2011), so it has already dropped by $10. Hopefully it will drop by more soon.

It's NOT just a platforming game. It's an action game to the likes of Devil May Cry (though way weirder from what I played in the demo.)

And finally, stop comparing games to other games. Especially FPS. There is no comparison. In FPS shooters the value is found in multiplayer. If that's your thing, great; money well spent. But for single player games the value is found in a lot of little things like story, length and objectives, among other things. It's absolutely not comparable. Also, a game shouldn't be worth more because it's made by a big company, so get that out of your head. Finally, in regards to graphics... I personally think Battlefield looks horrible. It's not visually appealing whatsoever to me. Whereas there are games like this that I found stunning.

Thats true. especially on the graphics. More realistic =/= better. Honestly I dont like games that have completely realistic graphics even if they are aiming in that direction. Cuz it not like you can actually reach that level so don't even aim for it. And think game looks kinda fun but i don't own a New Gen system. love platformers even if they are short/easy games.

It doesn't take a genius to see which game took more effort to make. El shittai used to cost $60? What a waste of good money. Let me give you a little lesson in common sense. Good and bad are relative. A "good" game is only "good" if you can compare it to other things around it. For example, Pong used to be the best video game because it was the only video game (it was also the worst). So, someone who says that's "good" or "bad" without comparing is just saying empty words.

The pricing may be a Canadian/American discrepancy. $50 may be the baseline there. The point is, all new games debut at the exact same price unless they're a special edition of some sort, like an HD collection.

You can only compare things that are similar. Have you never heard the term "apples and oranges"? Considering you haven't even played this -- you just watched the video I posted and decided it was pomegranate -- your opinion on it is completely invalid.

And no, from what I've seen of this I wouldn't say it's better than Arkham City. It's certainly nicer looking, in my opinion, but having played both (only briefly for either) I can certainly say Batman's gameplay is much better. I've heard El Shaddai has an incredible story and eventually I'll find out for myself but it's almost certainly better than a BATMAN story. (My cousin told me what happens and lol)

LOL. Comparing stylized to realistic graphics. Creating stylized graphics is way harder than you'd probably think. You can't compare graphics if their goals are completely different too. Btw, saying which took more effort to make is a funny assumption. As if "refining" an engine in comparison to creating a completely new IP is comparable.

On the note of actual gameplay, it's not even remotely close to DMC's system. It's closer to god of war's combat.

The only reason you'd buy this game is story. And from what I've heard, it's a really chaotic story unless you invest the time into trying to understand it (lots of mythical stuff iirc).

However, I don't see this game being so high priced now. It's not worth it imo.

ITT: Rusty trying to pass off his opinions as fact.
Good joke, bro.

"Good" and "Bad" are totally subjective and opinionated.
I find a game "Good" if I enjoyed it overall.
I NEVER compare games to each other. Otherwise Disgaea 4 would be the best game in the goddamn world for having unlimited replay value.

Comparing games is okay when you have an objective view on the matter as well as a suitable comparison item. Otherwise how would games improve if there is no comparison?

I've actually had my eyes on this game since it first came out. I had glanced over it and loved its art style, so I bookmarked it into my mind and later revisited it. I wanted to pick it up eventually, but each month it kept getting post-poned because I had other stuff to buy (especially these last few months which were packed full of long anticipated games).

I've heard mixed reviews of it. Some say it's a great game, others say it's just repetitive and generic gameplay, although both seem to agree it has a great art style and story. Either way, I signed up for Gamefly last month and put it at the top of my list to rent, so I'll be getting it soon to try it for myself.
