Building a Cheap FM PC
#1
Hi, ladies and gents. I was looking for some advice on building myself a cheap PC for free market use. Right now, my husband and I have 2 1/2 computers, but if he's on his and I'm on mine, it would be nice to have one that I could stick in the corner and sell stuff on the FM and leech the occasional noob character (never take HB first).

So, it doesn't have to be fabulous, and I'd like to use as much of what we already have as possible.

What we have:
Case
-Monitor (it's an old bulky CRT, but it works fine)
-Graphics card (iirc, GeForce 6900GT, should be fine)
-PSUs (pretty good one, should be more than enough for this machine, we also have an old not-so-powerful one that might work, too)
-wires and cables in excess
*Keyboard (as soon as I replace this one I'm on, which sucks but will be fine for that purpose)
-Mouse (seriously, I think we have three extras or something)

What we need:
-motherboard
-CPU
-hard drive (the old one I was planning to use died on me a couple months ago)

What we might need:
Network card, we might have one in a box somewhere though. I think we do, as long as we don't put this on the wireless, which is fine.

We don't have speakers, but I don't mind it being a silent PC.

Now, like I mentioned, this sucker's mostly gonna sit in a corner and have a shop up, or sit in a corner with an afk character I'm leeching. It doesn't need to be able to go to Zakum or anything, just sorta sit there. I might stick it in the living room and occasionally use it to check forums / email, but that's about all.

In simple terms, I'm not looking to build a good computer, I'm looking to build a cheap one that will work well enough. I'd prefer decent equipment that won't crap out after a month, but top-of-the-line is not necessary.

We have no plans to upgrade our current machines, so I won't be able to funnel parts, other than this keyboard.

So, does anyone have suggestions on what to get for what we need?

you would also need a spare Operating system license and ram. Also is the 6900 AGP or PCIE?

Pretty much any cpu/mobo you can buy would be good enough for MS, on my 800MHz (16MB video card) it runs slower but good enough for FM/leeching.

I don't really know specifics but just finding whatever cheap that can fit the 6900GT would be ok. If you live near a university or other companies that go through lots of computers you might be able to get something used for $50 or less that would run MS fine, might be easier to get a working computer depending when they sell stuff off.

You have to realize that the maplestory client is quickly growing in terms of size and requirements. When it first came out, it was only 400mb and now it requires 1.1 gigs to install. Graphics requirements have probably become higher as well.

Before, my pentium3 with 128mb ram could run maplestory flawlessly, but now even on my pentium4 2.8ghz with 512mb ram, there is alot of lag issues sometimes.

I'd recommend that you get a current generation computer with a core2duo processor in order to protect your investment because if you buy cheap/slow parts now, you'll eventually have to upgrade again. Maybe even sooner than you think according to the growing requirements of maplestory, and programs overall.
