I hate...

I hate what I look like in cameras/images taken by cameras, but I like what I look like in the mirror.

Why is this?

Self-Esteem.

Because you see what you want to see in the mirror and you see what everyone else sees in a picture.

Also STILL IMAGES are rarely ever as good at capturing how you look as live movement is. Even if you're super photogenic.

I'ma side with Locked on this one, not true.

EVERY stimulus that is accepted into the eyes is then interpreted by the brain. EVERY. No exceptions.

It's very true. You've no reason to be self-conscious in front of a mirror. How often do you stand in front of the mirror checking yourself out with someone else in the vicinity? With a photograph you look at it and you immediately see all of the things you don't want other people to see, or are afraid people will think look bad. The same goes for video because there's no one thing to focus on at any time because it's constant action. Unless you're sitting there picking your nose, of course.

This.
It's more related to self-esteem tho, while in the mirror, you can manage the way you look, you can get your better angle, and be more relaxed since you know what you'll look alike. While in a picture, although you know how you should be, you aren't relaxed enough to look natural, as you would in the mirror. A solution for better pictures is take them in the mirror. :O
Still, everyone looks much better outside a picture.

Hey, I have a related situation. I have no qualms with how my speech sounds coming out of my mouth, but play it back and even normal speaking makes me cringe. Explain.

Due to the fact that when you are speaking you cause your mouth and throat to vibrate and those vibrations would travel to your ear at nearly the same time the air you vibrated gets to your ear you hear a entirely different sound.
why it makes you cringe is probably because its not how you expected to sound like.
