Fiel Wrote:Problem is he was charged with robbery and not assault even though he had a weapon. This means he won't get any healthcare whatsoever. Pretty sure the suits in the government made sure of that. Paul did you even read the OP? You said he won't get any healthcare whatsoever, but he's already had several nurse visits and will see a doctor on Friday. Also, he's 59, so to your "he'll never get a job" bit, all he needs to do is be in prison until he reaches social security age and can start collecting those checks (all of this, again, was said in the OP). Here's another question for you: lots of countries surrounding the United States have socialized healthcare; for this contention I'll use Canada and Cuba as examples. If you've ever seen Sicko, Michael Moore documents cases in which people from the United States have peacefully traveled to those countries in order to receive cheaper drugs and care. In fact, Michael Moore himself brought several 9/11 volunteers, who developed severe chronic health conditions while helping at ground zero and haven't received the government aid they were promised for said issues, to Cuba in order to receive the kind of healthcare they needed. My point is thus: if more people knew about something like this, and could travel to another country, and we had mass exoduses from the United States to said countries, wouldn't the government care just as much then? I guess what I'm getting at is that, while logically yes, some idiot might attempt the same thing, ultimately there are a lot of peaceful ways of getting around the system. Technically what this man did falls under that, too. @ Cancambo: You cite concerns for redistribution to the government, and thus taxpayers, as a major concern for socialized health care. Tell me: what are the statistics showing countries around the globe currently with socialized health care systems have suffering economies thanks to such a system?

Just pitching in that Brazil has a semi-socialized medicine system. Everyone has the right to use the SUS (Universal Healthcare System), but depending on what you want there may be queues until you get to see your doctor (generally common and small things have longer queues while emergency, surgery, expensive medicine is really quick and good).
You are also free to opt for private healthcare if you want to avoid the queues and/or choose your doctor. There are insurance companies as well. I've been through the SUS system for a few broken bones and torsions as well as through the private system for things like dental care, eye care, etc. Sometimes under the same hospital there are a certain number of beds that are for SUS patients and the rest for private patients, the government pays for SUS patients and the patient (or the insurance company) pays for the private ones. I'd say it works pretty well.

I don't mean to say that Socialistic health care will necessarily hurt the economy. I just don't think socialism solves the biggest problem: cost. The US economy is still relatively fine with our horrible health care system. I'm against the insurance model because it raises costs because it discourages competitive pricing which is one of the main components of a successful capitalist economy. I also don't like that socialism allows the government to force citizens to do more things a significant amount do. Here's a good video that sort of sums up a lot of my opinions on healthcare. The article says he's getting some form of treatment and by the time he gets out he could collect social security.
So I'm curious what Feil is trying to imply... @Cancambo You do realize we're a mixed economy... we practice socialized and even communistic economic tactics...

A lot 3rd world countries are actually doing a lot of "good" to the world... Iirc, America has one of the largest incarceration rates in the world. It is nearly 1% of the population. The current prisons are mostly just a place to put people so they don't commit more crimes against society, but not much else. I believe European prisons are far better off. For example, iirc, Serbia really hard to rehabilitate prisoners. Inmates and guards generally have a good relationship because they both understand the goals. I've seen a woman's prison that allowed for women to care for their children inside jail. They were given a more "homey" cell and it really encouraged the mothers to get better so they could have a real life with their children. And healthcare isn't a right. Necessities aren't necessarily rights. Food and water, for example, are necessities but you aren't obligated to feed everyone. If a "right" requires for you to take someone else's resources then it isn't a right. In fact, that is violation of that person's right to property. You do, however, have a right to attempt to earn the food.

If it weren't for the fear of that, I'm sure we'd see more instances of this, just because prisoners have it way better than most instances in the real world. hmmm... so if you're a homosexual nyphomaniac with low standards, prison = or > heaven?

You do, however, have a right to attempt to earn the food. It works well in my country. And why is that? Health care covers basic needs, trying to keep the traits to the necessary. You aren't going to buy the "whole store" just because you have a cold, because, you know, THE DOCTOR TELLS YOU WHAT TO HAVE. Every medicine needs a receipt, and most of the medicines do cost the ammount of money they are worth. The doctor visit is still free though. It's not like going to a chemist and empty the whole thing for free. And if you really hate this system, you can also opt for private medicine, too. But at least, if your economic situation ends up bad, you'll at least be able to not die of illness that easily. Or avoid jail for a treatment. And also, by you definition of "right", making a new street pavement is also is a violation of a lot of people's right for property. Because most people won't even put a step on that street. The money comes from the same place.

Honestly I like the idea of a completely single payer healthcare system. Everybody puts in a little money and everybody gets what they need.
There are a lot of people in the US without insurance and there are a lot of people in the US that deserve to have adequate health but don't have that either.
