It's a WoW clone. No twists, no gimmicks, just plain WoW - improve the graphics, change the classes a bit, set it somewhere else, you have Rift. Their tagline "We're not in Azeroth anymore" pretty much describes the biggest difference between the games. It looks polished and it's probably the best WoW clone to date, but it's not doing anything to change the face of the genre and I'm really skeptical about it. Most current MMOs don't follow a subscription model simply because people aren't likely to keep multiple subscriptions and they can't compete with WoW.

I've heard some good things and some bad things from people who tried Rift after playing WoW as their main game. I was going to try it, but I'm gonna wait for Guild Wars 2 and see what that's all about. I hear that Rift is very very imbalanced at high end PvP (which is what I'd be interested in) because of the huge amount of customization they tried to implement. The more customization the more chances there are for there to be insanely overpowered specs.
I need to ask a couple people I know who played Rift for about 2 months or so now and are very high rated WoW players. I completely forgot to ask Talason when I saw him on the other day.

Yeah I haven't heard great things about it myself either. I wasn't really a fan of WoW though to begin with so I am somewhat biased, but probably for good reason.
My plan is to wait for diablo 3 to be my next pc game purchase since other games aren't really exciting me.
