Same thing I thought, looked it up commented it to my mother and she said that she knew so it might just be underused since the word is from guarani origin.

Ananás is pretty much used in European Portuguese. Although it's not an original word from the Original portuguese, Naná was the way the natives here called Pineapples, Portuguese didn't have knowledge about that fruit yet, so they incorporated the word Ananá into their language.
The fun part, is that the brazillian natives were the ones who used the term, but Brazillian Portuguese just changed the word from Naná into Abacaxi, while the European Portuguese still uses it. Interesting on how the language that was born within the natives erased that word, while the europeans kept it :o

Still, Ananás in Brazillian Portuguese are used to any other kind of Pineapple other than the comercial ones. Or even, the bad quality ones.
Also, i don't really get why they made the word Abacaxi the equivalent of it. It originated from "Ibacati", which means a smelly fruit with a bad scent, while those don't really have it :o

The same applies to Spanish. A Piña is a commercial Pineapple. An Ananá is a species of pineapple other than the common one.

It's not really common to know about such varieties because... Well, you don't really see one of these much.
