how "poisonous" is a burned plastic bottle?

my brother is an idiot, he have this experiement he have to do for homework.
(I don't really know what it is, but he have some stuff in this bottle, and he trys to heated up with the lamp in his room, when he check again, the plastic bottle melted, i know that it's poisonous, but not sure how poisonous, I opened the window of the room, and shut down the door to make the poison air go out. Is there anything else i can do?

You're screwed. Plastic, I believe, does contain things that when the bottle is burned, poketh holes in the O-zone.

but burned plastic releases chlorine gas, i've smelled chlorine gas serveral times before and right now i didn't even smell the chlorine (could be because I have a cold right now)

Well, it seems you're still alive atm, so don't worry about dieing from it afterwards... The effects are immediate, not afterwards...

You can only die from it if the concentration is EXTREME high (not normally high, EXTREME high). But since this didn't happen, there's no need to worry!

Btw, swimming pools also use chlorine in their swimming water to keep it clean, so mixed chlorine isn't -that- dangerous like snake venom or w/e ...

Most harmful toxins that are bad to your health are found in a type of plastic called PVC. These aren't used in plastic bottles.

They poke holes thru the bottle not melt the bottle down. Duh. Maybe thats where you screwed up.



Topic Starter... you're fine. Nothing is gonna happen but a funky ass smell.

having grown up a pyro myself and probly burned something like 100 of these things, youre going to be fine. and one thing you can look at is, it melted, it didnt fully burn. its gonna smell wierd as hell for a good long time, but nothing was really released. you actually burn it and your gonna see some real heavy looking black smoke and its gonna make you gag a little if you inhale it directly, but you didnt, and its ok. im still here, if chlorine was that bad i'd have been dead around age 5-6 and would not be here to tell you about it lol.

my family were always lazy, and used to throw loads of platic onto our bonfires.

There aren't any chlorine in plastic bottles. O.o

The only thing that may be considered dangerous to you, is the antimony trioxide that bottles may contain. However, this doesn't exactly turn into gas unless you've managed to heat the bottle up to 2700 F.

Only thing a fire will create is CO2 (and CO if the combustion isn't proper).
