Im trying to avoid Mythbusters. But Thermite was my F-A-V-O-R-I-T-E thing to make in Organic Chemistry.

Maybe the intense heat from the thermite sublimates the ice into water vapour so fast that it explodes outward? Or the vapour carries the thermite into a mist as stated in the video.

The ignited thermite is 4000 deg F (2204.444444444 def C), while the boiling point of pure water is 212 deg F (100 deg C). I'd say it sublimes the ice toward the centre of the ice block. The water vapour formed has such intense pressure that it causes the entire set-up to explode to bits.
But is it really strong enough to destroy a metal bucket...? Come to think of it, if the bucket is completely pulverised, then the explosion should originate from within the bucket itself... Simple temperature difference doesn't make water sublime. At atmospherical pressure it will always pass through the liquid state.
