How does critical work post-BB? + Sharp Eyes
#1
How does critical work? I'm aware each class has a base 5% chance of critical, and some skills have their own critical rate.

The question is, how much damage would the crits do? Let's say I use a regular attack, how much more damage would a crit do? Same for CL. Multiplicative? Additive?

Lastly, I heard Sharp Eyes changed a lot, but never heard any details. What happened with the skill?

Thanks in advance, from probably the highest leveled noob in Maple Story.

The way i understand it is:

1) If on the lower end of your range, the damage is +20%. If on the upper end, +50%.
2) Crits are multiplicative.
3) Crit damage can either be +min or +max. I think SE is +max, thorns is +min.

The way I understand it, and the way I'm pretty sure it works:
Infighter critical skill is 20% more rate and +10% damage.
SE makes that into 40% more rate and +40% damage.
I have no idea how the min/max crap works, we don't have any DBs with thorns to try, but i'm told the +critrate from thorns and SE stack.

If I understand correctly, you can think of your critical damage just like a damage range. Your crits will be between 1.2 times your minimum range times the skill % and 1.5 times your maximum range times the skill %. By default, all characters have a 5% chance to do 1.2x to 1.5x crit damage. With Critical Punch/Shot, for pirates, it'd bring the critical rate to 25% chance to do 1.3x to 1.5x crit damage. SE is the only skill that I know of which increases the maximum critical damage, all other skills increase the lower end of the crit range. So continuing with pirates as an example, with max SE, the crit chance becomes 45% (25%+20%) and 1.3x to 1.8x (1.5x+.3x). I've heard that Thorns stacks with SE post BB as well, so if we throw that in, we get 65% chance (45%+20%) to deal 1.6x (1.3x+.3x) to 1.8x damage with crits.

I know CL has an increased crit rate, 15%. Does this mean it has a 20% rate (15+5) or a 15% rate?

There are three variables to be aware of.

1. Critical rate
2. Minimum critical damage
3. Maximum critical damage

Your base critical stats are 5% critical rate and 20%-50% critical damage. Critical is multiplicative now, so if you roll a 48% critical, you will do 1.48x your normal damage. Critical damage is no longer randomly given by +% crit rate equips, Explorer rings, and hidden bonuses from skills (like Stun Mastery). It's all explicitly stated. SE is the only skill that boosts maximum critical damage, raising it from 50% to 80%. A lot of passive abilities raise minimum critical damage. I believe the highest minimum critical damage can be is 40%.

Thanks for that Dusk. It helps clear a lot of my confusion, as well as (I hope) the author's.

Also, side question, but considering KMS seems finished changing skills around, and we now fully understand all aspects of damage, will you and KaidaTan be working on post-Big Bang DPS charts anytime soon?

why does thorns raise critmin by +30% if the best bonus allowed is +20%?
