100% CPU usage 99.9% of the time...

Tried asking this stuff before (http://www.southperry.net/showthread.php...6&p=391733), never got any resolution...

Been living with the problem, but with the lag spikes (like most people have had for a few patches) I've wondered if fixing this will help with the spikes, if not its still worth fixing.

I can post updated picts if needed, as i type, maple is using 45-50% CPU, Firefox is using 1-10% and "system" is using the 45%+. Rarely does usage go below 100%, though something strange is that system is only 36K of memory and is still using like 50% of my CPU. (note that this is while the computer is in use not while idle in any way shape of form)

I have a P4 with HyperThreading (could look up specifics if needed) if that matters (someone asked about being a dual core in the last thread).

Have you tried checking the Threads tab after choosing Properties on the System process to see if that shows anything that's otherwise being surpressed?

Under the View menu be sure to have enabled -
Show Processes from All Users
Show New Processes
Show Fraction CPU
and
Show Unnamed Handles and Mappings.

And also check the TCP/IP tab in the process properties to look for suspicious connections you may be making.

There's also the possibility that your motherboard is simply lying. Some chipsets report 100% CPU erroneously because they attribute it to something other than the idle process. If you're not actually experiencing a slow down and nothing is coming up it's not really worth angsting over.

Doing a quick search on google, the issue appears to be either faulty drivers, runaway process, or overheating.

That result in particular apparently points to a Broadcom driver.

Update some drivers, double check your start-up processes and services with msconfig, removing the ones you don't need, and check your temperatures and fans.

so after trying a few things and reading i think its a combination of several problems....

I looked on the threads tab and found "usbport.sys+0x6086" using 50% CPU, yet i have nothing plugged into a USB port as all of them stopped work a long time ago (may or may not be related) tried uninstalling the USB drivers through device manager, managed to uninstall the "usb hubs" but anytime I select any of the controllers (theres 4 of them) and try to uninstall the device manage becomes unresponsive, tried both as the owner and admin no success either way

The broadcom thing got me thinking and so i disabled the device and bam 51% CPU usage immediately after it was stopped. I tried reenabling it and windows says it's not able to... I ended up having to restart the computer to restore operation and am back at 100% CPU usage... Tried updating driver/rollback both tell me" its the best version or theres no backup so STFU and leave me be" (no exact qutoes but you get my drift)

tried the rootkit revealer and midway the computer locked up due to messing with other pomegranate at the time, will try again later after some sleep

Interestingly when i suspended the usbport.sys, disabled the braodcom driver i managed a 2.34% CPU usage, never seen it that low!

Download updated drivers for your motherboard. Windows won't detect them automatically, you'll need to actually figure out your mother board via MoboCop or similar if you don't know it, and check the manufacturers website for updated chipset drivers.

So, I checked Gateway's driver support page for my computer, tried updating the motherboard drivers, broadcom's drivers, and read some more, no luck, the motherboard driver install stopped at 15% for well over an hour with no progress, and the broadcom driver change did nothing noticeable except after restart made my computer even less responsive

I ended up doing a system restore to about a week ago, so essentially undid anything i did do.

The problems I've encountered prior to trying to "fix" this stuff: USB ports all stopped working several months back, computer overheats if not overly ventilated (its a laptop that approaches overheat temps if left running sitting flat on a hard surface, i've take apart and vaccuumed it out several times to try and fix, no dice), computer is slow to react anytime a program is opened/reopened and hesitates sometimes for several seconds when doing normal things like switching tabs in FF, numerous other irrritants...

I'm usually able to fix these types of things on my own but as I plan to retire this 5yr old laptop once i go shopping for a new one (other priorities at the moment) but I'd still like it to be usable as a maple mule/ general use computer.

Verify your RAM isn't damaged since that can result in many of misbehaviors you seem to be experiencing with things not being capable of successful installation.

Again I would love to, but all the USB's are DOA currently... so short of opening up my computer again and connecting a new CD/DVD drive in it's place (this is a 5yr old laptop thats just barely worth saving after I buy a new one), I'm still stuck....

I recommend running it in blend mode so you also get your RAM tested.
