Hard drive, or the laptop?

Today I ran into a predicament. My laptop suddenly shut off, and now refuses to turn on. Either it will just randomly shut off, or if i'm lucky it will get all the way to past the boot-up screen and quickly meet a blue screen and restart.

So I'm trying to repair it the hard way and reformatting it from a disk. However, even when running the disk, the computer still turns off.

Does this mean the laptop is to blame, or the hard drive? Right now, I'm leaning towards the laptop, because the problems usually occur before it even boots up. If it's the laptop, that means I can save all my data that would otherwise be lost by reformatting the hard drive.

Also, the lap top I am referring to is the Lenovo y550.

Watching the fan during the boot up, it spins on and off

could be dying fan not doing its job, thus random shut offs. and from over heating caused some damage.

Yeah, I'm calling lenovo right now to tell them nothing they suggested work and since I have a warrenty hopefully I can get some sort of replacement.

So I'm fairly sure that this was caused by a malfunctioning fan, and all the problems seem to add up to that.

So I'm shipping my laptop down to Texas to get (hopefully) repaired.
