Lag at the same time everyday
#1
Hi, i'm either going mad or there is a trend to this.

I keep lagging on maple at the same time every night starting at 7PM GMT +10 (2 AM PST) it goes from a light drizzle of lag to a full on typhoon with things not moving or responding for over 10 second intervals.

I've checked all the computers in my house and none are doing any serious downloading. I do have a wireless network going but i put a MAC address filter and password on it.

I have ADSL 2+ so even light background chatter from instant messaging programs shouldn't make me lag this much? and at the same time every night...

Is there anyway to see what is leaching the bandwidth from my network?

It doesn't have to be your network that's the problem. Any node in the path between your home and Nexon can be the issue.

Run a traceroute to the Maplestory login servers during a good time and during one of these lag spikes and see what the difference is. ( tracert 63.251.217.2 )
You're most likely colliding with peak time somewhere on your ISP's route.

Turns out my flatmate is taking all the upload bandwidth with webcam chats, (about 70 KB/s ) Is there any way to restrict the amount of bandwidth taken by skype?

Programs like netlimiter.

Thanks so much! would a cap of 40 KB/s be appropriate?

It's the upstream that's killing you, i'd watch it via the monitor for a while to determine what your true bandwidth caps at ( as opposed to your advertised speed ) and then cap his low enough to let you run.

I've had this problem too and I always assumed it was my ISP server load.

Oh dear, turns out i am lagging even without them on skype or with the netfilter thingo.

It's not just my computer i tried maple on a different computer and the lag is the same...

all i get from tracing the route is:

Tracing route to 63.251.217.2 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.1.1.1
2 21 ms 20 ms 20 ms lb0.melbras8.mel.iprimus.net.au [202.138.4.71]
3 20 ms 24 ms 21 ms vlan452.sw02.mel.iprimus.net.au [202.138.4.33]
4 20 ms 10.1.1.1 reports: Destination protocol unreachable.

Trace complete.

It says this for any address i put in.

Maybe you need to increase the timeout? Try:
tracert -w 5000 63.251.217.2

I don't know what the default timeout is, but I've hit it a few times with ping tests. Lol 2000-3000ms ping times.

(Your bit about monsters not moving for 10 seconds sounds very familiar.)

To see all the command options, type
tracert /?
same for ping test:
ping /?

Interestingly that worked once, but not a second time or a third ect. I tried about five hours later and it still does not work.

Seems as though i only lag on my ArchMage and my Aran but none of my other characters... how frustrating.
