No, seriously.
I got to the 3rd disc of Final Fantasy 8, and I'll admit a couple of things I do like about it:
-Unique battle system (this can be good and bad, explaining later)
-Character designs
-Sorta unique characters
-Complex story
-Unique weapons
-Interesting plot twists
-Lots of summonings
-Pretty good graphics considering it's an older PSX/1 game!
-Lots of spells!
Things I do not like:
-Battle system is extremely annoying due to the fact that you can be overpowered JUST by stocking up on spells and junctioning
-Abusing Limit Break can be extremely easy
-You can SPAM summon without there being any drawbacks (the small time it takes to execute a summoning is short too)
It's a love-hate relationship for me with the battle system right now. I admit, I like it because it is unique and gives me a challenge because I don't understand it completely at the beginning of the game, and it took lots of time to adjust. Problem here being, I noticed an easy route for this game..
-Stock spells, 100s of the strongest spells or the ones that benefits a certain stat the most! (AKA getting maxed HP early on in the game!)
-Summonings are worthless. Because you can spam the sh`it out of it like crazy, and at the start of the game, they do triple-digits damage (for the most part). Physical attack is pretty sh`it early in the game, doing mininal 2 digits damage. I dislike the summonings in this game just because you can spam it, and there's no limitations at all. I can win every battle spam-summoning (and yes, I've been doing that all the way to disc 3....).
-No top, bottom, accessories, etc to be equipped besides a weapon.
-Weapons are ONLY upgradable, not purchasable.
That is about it. I'm sure people will disagree with me strongly. FF7 was pretty boring after getting through 2.5 hours of it, holy crap. FF8 at least was fun because I liked the characters a lot more. I'll finish FF8 and write more afterwards. Which was your favorite FF game and why? -expects FF13 people to jump in-
FFs I have played:
-Crystal Chronicles
-FF7 Crisis Core (this was the only one I liked...)
-FF7
-FF8
-FF Dissidia (can't forget this, oopsie! liked this too!)

FF7
Read below.
FF7:CC
Read below
FF10
Enjoyed this game alot, liked the battle system. Story was soso.
FF10-2
I love the gameplay only everything else i dont even remember.
FF12
Story was complicated but Balthier made everything worth it. Liked the new battle-system sort of ATB+roaming
FF12:Revenant wings
Played it merely for the story which was disappointing
Dissidia
Love this game story isn't that big but game play is fun.
FF3 DS remake
Magic systems stupid.
FF4 DS remake
Magic System is stupid
FFCC: EoT
Too much puzzles not enough Hack n' slash LOVED the Wi-Fi compatibility (played with my ms wife online <3)
4 warriors of light: FF gaiden
Wow i really enjoyed this game, had to look up guides in Korean to translate to English and still didn't finish the game because I'm stuck but The Crown System(job System) is very enjoyable and the Battle is very simple. Story is very Compelling(from what I understood), only bad thing i can find is the fact you cant choose your target but maybe i didn't understand that because its in Kr. They should really contemplate Having an English release.
I've like most of them
Ccept FF7:CC which i found unbearable with the stupidest game-play ever(X+L or R). I think its probably FF8 only that's easy like that. I agree that FF7 was boring, i gave up on it when cloud went batshit and you needed to use Cid. The whole story of FF7 was bad.
To answer your question. I don't know, maybe its because the first FFs were a hit and people just went along with it, but I enjoy FFs you seem to have played some that I wouldn't exactly say are good but it is my opinion.

FF13 might have been bad, in quite a few aspects, not at all what was expected. It lived up to the luck the number has. But FF14; our new MMO; looks amazing. I totally want to play it. Bad.

I just didn't like how FF7's story went. Or the actions I had to do when I was controlling Cloud, it was just.. boring. Crisis Core was a lot different, and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm going to be honest, it was great! I'll probably play other FFs some other time and compare then, but for now, I'll try to finish FF8. Not hoping on the FF13 bandwagon yet though, I've heard lots of sh`t about that game.

You should get a used copy of FF10 or FF9.
(I seriously want to try FF9)

The only FFs I've finished are FF9 and FF tactics advancce, both of which I loved.
I did play FF7, FF6, FF tactics for PSP... maybe one more, and a little (VERY little of FF10)
@above, FF9 is awesome.

FF1 - A great start to the series, did everything Dragon Quest did, but better.
FF2 - Different, but not as horrible as everyone says.
FF3 - Haven't played it yet.
FF4 - Great game, had a great story for it's time and started the trend of FF stories.
FF5 - A wonderful game in my opinion. Apparently a lot of people had on this game because it's not very "real", why, I have no idea. But I love it and it's one of my favorites.
FF6 - The eternal, which is better FF6 or FF7? I really enjoy FF6, maybe it could be because it's from my childhood and I prize it more than FF7, but I don't know if I like FF6 more than FF7 though since the two are as different as they are alike.
FF7 - An okay game, I have never really had any complaints about it. Except that it gets too much praise and hate.
FF8 - Once again a different FF from past ones, and once again an okay game. I played through it and came out of it not hating it like most people, but it does rank lower than other FF games I have played.
FF9 - Blending the old style of FF with the new style, a perfect combo for a perfect game in my opinion. One of the last great FF games, of course that is coming from someone who grew up on the old style so take from it what you will.
FF10 - I didn't hate it.
FF10-2 - No.
FF11 - Never played it.
FF12 - Once again a game that was different from the other FF, and made a whole new style all it's own. I found it to be okay, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the older games.
FF13 - Different, but enjoyable. Enjoyed it more than 10, 10-2 and FF12.
FFT - Wondrous game.

Final Fantasy is "hyped" because 1. it's a seriously old series with huge nostalgia factors and 2. people have no taste (see: Twilight)

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing on the series. I like some aspects of it. I've yet to find an RPG that I hated entirely, there are always some features that I enjoyed that I thought to be a bit unique. Guardian's Crusade is still a favorite older PSX RPG of mine, same goes for LoD. I was surprised that you sorta agreed with me, Sarah. I was expecting you to rage at me, haha.

Final Fantasy games are good, and with the reputation of past games it should appeal to many people.
Here's just my small opinions of some FF games I've encountered.
FF1: Not too bad, pretty good considering the time it was made.
FF2: Okay game. Characters not that memorable except Firion, Mateus, and Leon?
FF3: Hated it. The class system was good.
FF4: I liked this. Badass characters like Kain and Golbez.
FF5: Dull. Butz and X-death are more laughable than anything else. Something about not finding tasty diversions like pizza in the afterlife and Christmases.
FF6: The music makes this game, and Locke.
FF7: Loved it! Back in school I couldn't stop thinking about this game 'till I beat it!
FF7 Crisis Core: Easy much? It was fun seeing some of the main cast of the original game. I remember Cissnei.
FF8: Okay game. I don't like Squall and he's slightly more fun than a wall. Quistis & Rinoa <3
FF9: Great game, definitely better than some others but not one I would recommend to others.
FF10 (Int.): Great game. Very colourful and makes you want to keep playing until the end. Blitzball is fun ;]
FF10-2: Not really that bad a game if you don't rush through and do the side stories that follow up on acquaintances which are quite interesting.
FF11: Never played.
FF12: One of the worst games in the series. But Balthier makes the game bearable.
FF13: Waiting for a friend to be done with the game, as I don't have a PS3 :x
FF14: Seems interesting enough to try.
FF Tactics: Great game until you get a certain Holy Swordsman or a Calculator. The game is beaten by that point.
FF Tactics (PSP): Same as above, but add in Balthier.
FF Dissidia: Fun but gets old fast.

Not at all. I wish I could find the (multiple) posts where I went through each game and explained why I think most final fantasy games are completely worthless. I only really like 9, 12 and somewhat 13 (though I think that's mostly just the dazzle from the graphics). I mean, I've played all of the main series and many of the spin-off titles but most of them are just crap.
Though even the worst ones have some nice features like Final Fantasy X-2's battle system which is just beautiful. Fast-paced, smooth and highly customizable.

I thought I read somewhere that you said you felt the need to play FF13 because you've played most of the others. Of course that doesn't mean you're a fan.
I've played most of the FF's and I don't call myself a fan.

I am willing to play any game, regardless of how bad I believe it will be. I've been surprised before. But... then there are games like Enchanted Arms that look really bad but you really can't prepare yourself for the horror within.
Playing Enchanted Arms is my biggest regret in life.
also khoi: I love Guardian Crusade. pineapple yeah!

I'm glad there's another person on this forum that has played Guardian's Crusade. It's tied with LoD as one of my favorite classic RPGs of all time. Haha. Guardian Crusade, I think I played when I was around 14 or 15? (I'm 21 now) I loved it, and was extremely addicted to the game's battle system and fun story! In a way, the story is childish but that's sort of why it's fun. The music was great too! I wish I remembered what happened to my Guardian Crusade, I think I broke it by accident or something.
