Needing to buy new internets

I'm looking around for ISPs, plans for the cheapest, most reliable, and for the fast speed like any common internet junkie would. I've been using AT&T DSL ever since rickrolling and Chuck Norris was actually funny and back then, anything above 56k was a beast. Right now, I'm using basic DSL for $20/mo for an advertised "768 Kbps" connection (mostly of the time, it's half of that of speed). I want to get a better connection so I've some questions:

Which is the "ideal" speed for me? There are anywhere from 3-6 computers using the internet in my house. Often times, there are no more than 2 computers going hardcore and sucking up net juice (streaming and /or downloading). A ~20Mbps connection is nice but not within a price range I'd like so I'm thinking somewhere between 5-10Mb/s. Inputs?

Cable or DSL? Security and reliability aside, what is the difference between the two? Is an advertised cable speed of 20Mb/s the same as an advertised DSL speed of 20Mb/s? I know if many folks in a neighborhood use a cable connection, it will an a small effect but I don't think that'll effect me. This neighborhood is probably one of the only things more poor than my connection.

Comcast, Cox, Roadrunner, (high speed) DSL or other?

Final note: bundle internet isn't an option.

I've been using Roadrunner for god knows how long. I think we pay like $40 a month for 15Mbps.

There was a point where their service was absolutely horrible (Internet cut in and out, sometimes didn't work, etc), but it turned out that we just had a really old cable that needed to be replaced. They came out (in the winter) and installed a new cable for us at no charge, which was really nice.

Stay away from Comcast at all costs. They limit your bandwidth and destroy P2P connections. Go with Earthlink or roadrunner.

Cox isn't bad. That's what I use. I've never had problems with them, really. The only thing is that the speed may not be EXTREMELY fast, unless you're lucky. I've seen my speed go as high as 30MB per second, though. They're cheap and their service is great.

Say what now? I'm not going to claim to know much about the subject, but here my only choices are Comcast and AT&T's DSL. I don't think there's much of a contest, even if Comcast does limit bandwidth.
