lately my laptop has been doing some strange things like running 100% cpu usage when i'm doing pretty much nothing and for some reason on the task manager the system/system idle processes are running 75% cpu usage, no clue why here's the hijackthis report:

i've scanned with malware bytes, microsoft security essentials and spy bot, nothing worth mentioning

good program if you want to see what's hogging the cpu, etc.

according to process explorer, when doing absolutely nothing, the process "system" is using 50% cpu rarely changes from that number though every once in a while it goes down to like 49.5% but returns almost immediately to 50%

only other things using cpu is "system idle processes" which has "system" as one of it's sub processes...

System is not a process. Click the + next to System to expand the list.

Is your CPU dual-core?

maybe if you have indexing on, it will do that when the pc is on idle.

system is expanded, none of the subprocesses are using any or really negligable amounts of cpu (.72% or no value listed, and never more than 2 using cpu) and as for dual core, not really its a P4 with Hyperthreading so its one core thats cloned

as far as I know the indexing is turned off manually by me whenever i see it open (microsoft's searching thingy can't remember the real name) and its not even only when the computer is in idle state, anytime i try running anything the cpu jumps to 100% usage and rarely deviates from the 100%

also forgot to mention the memory committed to these processes seems really small, currently for system its 52K and idle process its 16K

Take a screenshot of your entire process list in alphabetical order while this cpu hogging is in process perhaps.

I think you should check if you have a rootkit. Gmer ( http://www.gmer.net/ ) and Blacklight ( http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/secu...es/blacklight/ ) are a couple good rootkit scanners.

all with all windows closed, processexplorer open/minimized to tray, and paint closed between screenshots

edit:
uninstalled viewpoint, ran gmer 3 times and every time mid scan the comp goes unresponsive and i'm forced to hard restart, trying the fsecure one now, nothing found

I'm curious if you found a fix for this. I have a friend whose computer is fairly new (less than six months old) and is doing the same pomegranate, even when all he has open is IE. It's strange, lol.

My suggestion. Download AnVir Task Manager. When you run it, AnVir shows you all startup programs and Windows processes, so you’ll find harmful file in a minute. I always use it when I clean one’s PC. Sorry for the offtopic.
