DVD drive beeping
#1
Ok, this mainly happens when I'm playing DFO. It always happens immediately following a keypress, never when I'm not pressing any keys. The key that triggers it is usually one of the arrow keys. It has also happened occasionally when closing the DVD drive. Maybe an average of once a day, the DVD drive will go "beep beep beep!" and everything else my computer is doing stops cold, both CPU and hard drive. No mouse cursor movement, no nothing. Then I'll hear the DVD drive spin up a little, make noises of the kind it does when closing the drive, then stop, then "beep beep beep!" again, then the computer continues. If I am playing DFO, there is about a 1 in 3 chance that my screen will turn blue with some vertical white lines. I cannot get out of that screen. I am not sure if it is an actual blue screen of death or just a graphical glitch, but ctrl+alt+del does nothing.

I'm on a laptop running Windows XP.

Needless to say, this is rather annoying. Has anyone heard of a similar problem? It sounds like a hardware problem. It's even happened a couple times at the boot loader while choosing which OS to boot. Where could I take it to try to fix it? Around how much might it cost if it can be fixed?

Maybe you could try disabling the device driver before playing DFO?

I've tried that. But since it can happen during the boot loader, it must be happening at a lower level.

Just to follow up in case anyone with the same problem reads this, I physically removed my DVD drive from my laptop and the problem stopped.
