Put an end to DC hacking.

xLeviathan Wrote:Heh. It's probably more like 1/100th...they generally can spam like 5,000 packets in 5 seconds or so. But yeah, I figured it was something like that. I guess it just depends on what you're typing on each time you press enter.

I was trying to be conservative, but yeah. It's a magnitude of order of difference. Virtually impossible for a normal user to do on accident.

xLeviathan Wrote:The server boots you after a certain amount of lag, or your network connections does? :f6:. I wasn't aware there was a timer for disconnection. (Sorry, just found that interesting).

The game polls periodically with AYT's and characters that can't or don't respond are disconnected. If you've ever lagged out then gotten the "still logged in" message that's because you haven't failed enough AYT's yet for the server to DC you. When it hits that threshold your phantom gets kicked and you can log back in.

That's one way you can tell whether your lag (and a corresponding dc) was client side or server.

xLeviathan Wrote:Is there a reason for them doing this? Ignorance or...? I'd think it wouldn't be much/any harder to write it to be handled by the server than by the client...

The question isn't how hard it is to code, but how big of a server they'd have to buy, and how much bandwidth they'd have to pay for.

It seems the initial design was to write a distributed game, or what people call "peer to peer", not a client-server model at all. Have the players' pc's talk to each other, and leave the server to do only the minimum necessary to allow them to do it (e.g., ip lookup) and to save the data when clients log off.

The result was what we have today, way too much of the game is on the players' computers, where it can easily be tampered with. So now they have to keep writing checks, and more checks, and second-guess the client... resulting in much more network traffic and much more server load.

 Spoiler

Agreed, but it's also worth noting that having their server be middle man between all connections the way it is seems to be a "best of both worlds" attempt that's actually the worst - they get all the extra bandwidth, the only thing they saved on is the CPU associated with tracking geographic concurrency.

I had submitted a ticket about this about 2 months ago, and on my ticket page it says it is closed and "Awating a GM." Whatever that meansRolleyes

Anyway, I submitted a ticket with this in it, and added a SS to my old one.

Hopefully something will happen soon.

It means it's closed and noone will ever look at it or address it, basically.
I've had tickets in that state since december 2008.

Just checked again tonight and they closed my second ticket.

I somehow managed to get the Nexon America phone number, but last time they called their response was "log a ticket online."

Customer service ftw?

Well actually, the best way is for Nexon to implement a chat delay in the client or a check somehow.
If the packets were spammed by user "x" after a number of times, the client will ignore that from being processed.
That'll be more efficient for both Nexon's server and client.

That packet spam won't cause a DOS on your computer won't it? Since it's like a few hundred bytes per second similar to downloading things using a download accelerator.

well I have no idea what a packet editor is,but I guess it wont help them out,I support this idea, though.
They should spend more time working on it and they probably know that this issue is unique and difficult to fix.

So how come there are times when you can't log in for 15 minutes or up? Wouldn't the server kick you after the first minute?

I've never seen it behave in that manner.

It does when you get trapped in the MTS or CS. =[

Sorry for the semi-late reply. Forgot about this thread for a while.

Sorry to necro but I received a reply

Quote:Greetings,

Thank you for contacting Nexon America's Customer Support team.

We appreciate you reporting this information. I will look into this for any possible issues, and will take action against any accounts violating the Terms of Use.

Please keep in mind that you can alert a GM while in game to report any users infringing on the Terms of Use. You can do so by right clicking on the offender's character and selecting "Alert GM". Select the appropriate category and be sure to include the chat log. I understand this may not be possible according to your report, however, if you are able to send a in game GM report it would be very helpful and appreciated greatly.

Thank you and happy Mapling!

Sincerely,

GM Raven
Nexon America, Inc.

Seems like they have no idea what they are going to do about this. They fail to realize that the new reporting system is not the easiest thing to use as well.

Ah, I love Nexon.

They really do have the answer for all situations.

The ticket reply really speaks for itself.
I've had no problems using the new report function. The problem is that it's as useless as the old report tool.
