This is probably one of my most favorite of favorite series, and yet I never was able to get around to GU era yet. Here I'm talking about all of it: Sign, the four games, Legend of Twilight Manga, AI Buster... Has anyone else seen/read/played the entire thing? I really love large and complex settings for games and anime, and there's no more detailed world for a storyline to occur in than the one here. On top of all this, it's amazing and still plausible. It could happen someday. Having just watched through it recently, I'm feeling like going through the games again. It's strange how it draws me in so well. I would even go so far as to say that this anime shaped the way I behave in game and online in general. Sign is a somewhat well known anime, but I don't think many people get into the other aspects of it and it's for this reason that they can't appreciate the work as it should be.

It's interesting to me, but I never really got too into it. Back when sign was airing on Cartoon Network I used to watch it a lot, but I missed quite a few episodes and so I never fully understood everything. I watched the whole Twilight series of it, which was alright (although I heard the manga was much better) and I watched the beginning of Roots, but only like the first 9 episodes.
Never played any of the games though...

I've seen SIGN and LotTB, as well as playing all 4 games.
I like Shugo and Tsukasa best.

I really REALLY liked the premise and the series
BUT I HATED!
Tsukasa's character.
I just wanted to choke him all the time.

I've only seen .hack//sign.
I can say that I absolutely hated it. A story simply cannot be made through pure dialog alone and that's what killed it for me. There were too many metaphors and symbols and not enough literal plot to the story.

The .hack//GU games were absolutely amazing. This whole series is very gripping. Kites original story was very well thought out as well and I can't help but find Balmung of the Azure Sky to be the best name ever.

The .hack//whatever franchise is really inconsistent but overall it's a pretty cool series of anime/games. But the part of .hack that really made me like the franchise was the installment of .hack//G.U..
Yeah .hack//Roots was awful and .hack//Trilogy was even worse, but the storyline/concept was great, and the soundtrack and viral marketing (dothack.com/gu) made it really interesting. So did the trailer at E3 2005 - that's still my favorite game trailer to date (except maybe Diablo 3).
Overall the animes for .hack were subpar and the first gen games were too, so i don't know why this series has always been so appealing to me. I guess I really like MMOs?
Too bad all .hack makes me do is want to play MMOs really bad. And really really wish The World was a real game =\
